What Is It Like To Work on an Oil Rig?
Most drilling is done on small, old land rigs in fairly well-established fields doing repetitive cookie-cutter wells. Most people who work in the US oilfield are southerners with a high school education. Please don't take that as disparaging them in any way -- most college grads are too prissy about grease and manual labor to survive in that type of job. There are a ton of smart people on drilling rigs who just didn't take the academic route for whatever reason. Of course, there are also a ton of ignorant, racist, sexist du*****es! But that's the nature of the beast. Anyway .. there are a lot of people like me in the oilfield, but we're definitely in the minority.

Peak Oilfield Service Company is looking for qualified oilfield riggers to assist in crane-associated project work in Peak's business unit in the Bakken Oil Fields of North Dakota. Project work includes assisting in erecting Lufkin and Weatherford pump jacks and other oilfield support duties as required. A minimum of one year of direct oilfield rigging experience is required. Basic Rigger and Signal Person Cards preferred. 10 Hour OSHA Certification required. The work schedule is three weeks on/off for 11.5 hour per day. Peak will provide transportation from Minot or Williston to its facilities in Tioga. Candidates must successfully complete post-offer/pre-hire background, drug and physical screenings.

What is the working shift for oilfield riggers?
Answer:
It usually consists of working 12 hours on and then 12 hours off.
On most offshore installations they work a 2 week turnaround but more recently they seem to prefer working 3 weeks on and then have 3 weeks off.This usually involves alternating between nightshift and dayshift.There are some positions offshore that stay on either a constant nightshift or dayshift as ther job implies egNightpusheretc)

Job Functions for Rigger:

Operates machines to perform heavy lifting of steel plates, steel rods, drilling towers, platforms and construction equipment.
Assembles and disassembles steel structures.
Allocates and attaches pulleys, cables, braces, booms, chains and hooks to lifting machinery.
Builds equipment around objects to be moved.
Uses hand signals and verbal instruction to aid Crane Operators in placing objects.
Performs repairs to steel structures and equipment as necessary.
Performs safety checks of equipment before use.
Dismantles and stores rigging equipment after use.

Job Description for Rigger

Riggers work in conjunction with Crane Operators to operate machines lifting steel plates, steel rods, drilling towers, platforms and construction equipment on the rig. They are responsible for deciding which pulleys, cables, braces and booms are appropriate for lifting jobs, in addition to attaching hooks, chains and cables to lifting machinery. There are also situations in which the Rigger will have to build equipment around an object, such as a boom or tower.

While a High School degree is not required, it can be helpful in gaining an apprenticeship. Rigging apprenticeships typically consist of 204+ hours of class instruction, in addition to three to four years worth of on-the-job training. Apprenticeship concentrations include blueprint interpretation, care and use of rigging tools, mathematics, welding, and oxyacetylene flame cutting.

While onshore Riggers work 40 hours per week, five days a week, offshore Riggers work 50 to 60 hours per week, on a rotating schedule of seven days on and seven days off, 14 days on and off, or 14 days on and seven days off.
