The Ladakh Diaries : Pangong Lake, on the eastern tip of Ladakh is a vast expanse of pure blue nestled amid the majestic Himalayas. Two thirds of it extends into China. It is possible to detect over 7 shades of blue along the lake at a single point of time, ranging from pale turquoise to an electric azure.

The Ladakh diaries: To the general gaze, Ladakh seems beautiful in a stark way, but look just a little closer, and you will find that it is completely characterised by contrast. Majestic windswept mountains coexist with lush green villages; permanent glaciers shine under the torrid sun; children gaze at you seriously while grandfathers, rendered older than their age by the unforgiving winters, smile at you like toothless innocent toddlers.

India is currently in the midst of the Ganpati Festival, where for ten days Indians celebrate the beloved Elephant God, Ganesha. This is a truly national event marked by festivity in all corners of India, with ingeniously decorated idols of Lord Ganesha built and visited by throngs of worshipers who believe Him to be 'Vighnanashak' : the destroyer of all obstacles in their path.

On this day, 67 years ago, India fulfilled her "tryst with destiny" to become an Independent nation. Here we showcase the portal to this great country at the Attari border in Punjab. Perched on top of the gate is a picture of Mahatma Gandhi, considered the most instrumental figure to help India win her freedom, using the philosophy of Satyagraha or non-violence, which was subsequently followed by the likes of Nelson Mandela in their own countries.

More to come on the Attari-Wagah border and the vibrant state of Punjab. Watch this space!

The 2500 year old temple city of Madurai houses the renowned Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple, dedicated to the Goddess Parvati and her consort, Lord Shiva. One of the top 30 nominees on the list of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this spectacularly vivid structure contains thirty-three thousand sculptures. The striking aesthetic beauty of this temple comes second only to the devotion that it inspires, attracting about fifteen thousand visitors on an ordinary day and over a million during the annual 10-day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival, celebrated during April and May.

State in Focus: TAMIL NADU.
Surrounded by Tamil Nadu on three sides and with the Bay of Bengal on the fourth, is the Union territory of Pondicherry. An ertstwhile French colony, Pondicherry is replete with Parisian style avenues and boulevards. Pondicherry is home to the Aurobindo Ashram, a haven for local and foreign seekers of meaning and wisdom. Associated with the Ashram is the experimental township of Auroville (City of Dawn), where people from all over the world live and work together in harmony and without distinction. We present to you today a slice of this quaint and impressive little destination, with avant-garde architecture typical of the city, the famous Rock beach and its boulevard, a glimpse of the Matrimandir, a structural wonder in Auroville known to be visited 'to find one's consciousness', and Lakshmi, the curious elephant who stands everyday outside the Ganesh temple, blessing all those who enter.

State in Focus: TAMIL NADU
Tanjore, in Tamil Nadu, is the site of many of the centuries old Great Living Chola Temples, which are now recognised UNESCO World Heritage structures. The most renowned of these is the Brihadeeswarar temple, located right in the centre of the city. The temple, displayed here, represents the purest form of Dravidian architecture and is one of the largest temples in India. At the entrance is the huge sacred Nandi Bull, carved out of a single block of stone. Also presented is a sample of the famed Tanjore style of painting, akin to the European frescoes and usually dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses.
