S.P.J Sadhana School

S.P.J Sadhana School SPJ Sadhana School is a specialist school, the only one of its kind in India which trains multiple handicapped children to be the members of the society. S.P.J.

Sadhana School is more than a school, it is an internationally / nationally known Resource Centre for training persons with Special needs, as well as updating teachers in effective methodologies. The only school in the world offering 5 year polytechnic courses to the mentally challenged young adult and guaranteeing 100% employment. We have had 93% success rate offering Auditory Integration trainin

g and Sensory Scoptic Syndrome screening to both special and dyslexic students and adults in normal work situations. Being ISO 9000-2001 certified has put in systems to keep up standards for efficiency and effectiveness. This commits us to continual improvement. Ever since its inception, over 35 years ago, the S. P. J. Sadhana School has worked ceaselessly toward helping the mentally challenged individual, not only to learn to adjust to the world around, but more - to become a useful member of the human community, independent and self sufficient, with a contribution to make to society. A highly trained team of teachers and professionally qualified therapists each of whom has hands on experience in the field, look at other aspects of mental retardation, such as the benefits of nurturing the special talents each individual manifests and encouraging the student to work on them. For it has been found that given what they like doing, they perform well. Arising out of such challenges, special teaching strategies and unorthodox technologies are developed and are constantly reviewed and upgraded. The goal is to transfer as much learning as possible, to make the learning process enjoyable to moulding it to the individual student’s needs and to elicit the maximum satisfaction from it, both to the teacher and the taught. Years of such experience have crystallised into a five-year vocational course, which, while tapping a trainee’s special gift and fostering it, aims to equip that student to be launched into a self-reliant and productive life. The course covers training in art and crafts, such as stencil and airbrush painting and designing, tailoring and stitch craft. Three-dimensional skills include clay modelling. Other trainings imparted are Catering and Hospitality, and office skills and General Vocational Skills. Concurrently, during these years of training, equal stress is laid upon employment criteria - correct behaviour in work situation, communication and self-help skills. All this is towards the end of placing the student in a compatible work situation.

Children with special needs have the power to demonstrate that everything is possible.

Logic is an illusion compared with the power of determination.

From having a severe metabolic disorder, in addition to physical and mental disability, to running a Cyber cafe in Chandigarh! This is Raminder's story...

Success Story – Raminder Lamba

When a weak, mentally and physically challenged Raminder Lamba, with severe metabolic disorders, walked into the Office Procedure department in 2002, it was truly a major challenging task for OPC to make impossible “Possible”, as at Sadhana we never give up on any child and ready always to fight any battle for a child’s future goals.
Raminder joined our School in June 2002, having passed IV grade in Spastic society. He had a severe metabolic disorder, in addition to physical and mental disability. Under the doctor’s guidance, we made Raminder’s diet programme. With training Raminder learnt to eat the correct food and avoid foods that were causing problems. Special curriculum was planned for his training. Simultaneously his mother was counselled to stop “pampering him” and help with his rehabilitation.

Slowly Raminder gained lots of confidence during training, overcame many obstacles and gave confidence to his parents when it was decided to take him for IIP educational trip. After his first educational excursion, Raminder was a changed personality and was confident and proud of himself. On his return from the trip his father remarked “Raminder is a changed person and now I can see a future for him”.
Soon after the IIP, we started his Internship programme at AIWA (Army India Women Association) where he worked on Computer.
Raminder Graduated from Sadhana School in 2005 with Diploma in Office Skills.

Thereafter Raminder’s family shifted to Chandigarh, where his father started a Communication Centre at Mohali in Sector 65. He independently operated Photocopier, handled lamination, spiral binding, fax & ISD very efficiently. He travelled to his work place on scooter independently – it was adapted to hand breaks etc.
Today, he has opened his own Cyber café wherein he has 6 computers for coaching in MS office. He has trained 3 batches of 4 students each in MS office (MS word, Power point, Excel).

He has expanded his business to textbooks; he caters to a number of schools in Chandigarh for their stationery needs. From having a severe metabolic disorder, in addition to physical and mental disability, to running a Cyber cafe in Chandigarh!

This is Raminder's story...
