Four species of Barbets (out of 9 species which are found in India) can be seen in Sindhudurg district. This is one of them - White-cheeked Barbet – a species endemic to India. Nowadays white-cheeked barbet is highly vocal here in Sindhudurg and it can be heard with continuous Kutroo-kutroo-kutroo calls very similar to the call of Brown headed barbet. Sometimes it can be spotted perfectly camouflaged in the lush green canopy of the trees.
