How WhatsAppâs Scanner Works
Users can access it in a chat by tapping the attachment (paperclip or â+â) icon, selecting âDocumentâ, and then choosing âScan Documentâ.
The document scanner is currently available to Android beta users and has already been rolled out on iOS for several months.
Users can access it in a chat by tapping the attachment (paperclip or â+â) icon, choosing âDocumentâ, and then selecting âScan Documentâ.
The feature offers two scanning modes:
Manual mode: Lets the user take photos at their preferred time for more control.
Automatic mode: Detects and captures document edges automatically, making the process faster.
Features and Options
After scanning, users can preview the image, add filters (Colour, Greyscale, Black & White, Photo), crop, rotate, or adjust edges for better clarity.
Scanned documents are converted into a PDF file on the device, which can then be shared instantly in individual or group chats.
Scanning multiple pages is supported, with all pages combined into a single PDF.
Privacy and Security
All scanning, processing, and conversion happen locally on-device using native APIs, ensuring privacy.
Shared scanned files are protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption.
Rollout Status
The document scanner is being rolled out gradually and may initially be available only to beta testers before reaching all users.
It is a significant addition to WhatsAppâs productivity features, integrating scanning, editing, and instant sharing seamlessly.
This feature simplifies document management and sharing, eliminating the need for separate scanning apps and streamlining workflows for work, studies, and everyday tasks.
