3,500 giant Aldabra tortoises. 14 villas. One private island. 🐢

The tortoises outnumber the guests forty-six to one. They have been here longer than the resort. They will be here long after everyone leaves. They roam the island entirely on their own terms — the paths, the gardens, the beaches, and occasionally the villa terraces.

Fregate Island Private is 544 acres of Seychelles granite and forest — roughly the size of Monaco — owned outright, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It has just reopened after a complete rebuild so total that only two structures survived it: a 200-year-old chapel and the old boat shed.

The conservation record here is extraordinary and specific. When work began on this island, the Seychelles magpie-robin — a small black bird with white wing flashes — was down to about a dozen individuals in the entire world. This island now holds around 250 of the 500 that exist. The tortoise population has grown from 150 to over 3,500 in fifty years of active restoration.

14 private pool villas. Three estates. A beach that has been voted among the most beautiful in the world. Seven beaches in total — one for each day, each one empty. Rates from €11,550 per night. A helicopter from Mahé in 15 minutes.

This is not a private island in the way that phrase has been devalued. This is what the words were supposed to mean.

Someone asked a group of architects one question: what should a treehouse actually be? 🌲

This is what happened.

Treehotel, Harads, Swedish Lapland — a small village 60km south of the Arctic Circle where several of Sweden’s leading architects were each given a tree, a forest, and complete creative freedom. No two rooms. No two architects. No two answers.

The Mirrorcube: a glass cube wrapped in reflective panels that mirror the forest so precisely it becomes invisible. You’re sleeping inside something that isn’t there.

The UFO: a suspended capsule 6 metres above the ground, reached by a retractable bridge. Shaped exactly like what you think it is.

The Bird’s Nest: from the outside, a mass of branches and twigs indistinguishable from the surrounding forest. Open the door and find a double room with panoramic forest windows.

In summer, the Midnight Sun means the sky never fully darkens — the forest holds a kind of amber glow at 2am that has no equivalent anywhere else. In winter, the Northern Lights perform above the pine canopy while the Luleå river below freezes solid and the dog sledding begins.

A river below. A forest around you. A sky that does different things depending on the season. Silence that feels designed rather than accidental.

Safaris aren’t just in Africa. 🐆

Most people think safari means the Serengeti. It doesn’t. It means going somewhere wild, with a guide who knows the land, to find animals living entirely on their own terms.

Torres del Paine, Chilean Patagonia is the best place on earth to observe wild pumas. Most wildlife films about Patagonia were shot here. Almost every photograph of a South American puma you’ve seen on the internet was taken in this park. The difference from Africa: here, you have the granite Paine towers, glacial lakes, and Andean condors - with a wingspan of up to 10.5 feet, the largest bird of prey in the world - as the backdrop.

Explora Torres del Paine offers more than 40 guided explorations, all included in your stay — puma tracking at dawn, kayaking to Grey Glacier, birdwatching for condors and flamingos, horseback riding with a rare breed of Patagonian horses on Explora’s own private reserve.

The wildlife list: pumas, guanacos, Andean condors, foxes, rheas, flamingos, huemul deer — Chile’s endangered national animal — and if you time it right, orcas and humpback whales along the coast.

The most unusual breakfast in the world. And the giraffes don’t ask permission. 🦒

Giraffe Manor, Nairobi. 12 rooms in a 140-acre forest sanctuary built in 1932 — in the middle of one of Africa’s great cities. The resident herd of Rothschild giraffes has been visiting the house since 1974. One of the most endangered giraffe subspecies on earth. They arrive at 7am. They stay as long as they like. Nobody tells them otherwise.

There is no way to fully prepare for the moment a giraffe puts its head through a window and stands at your breakfast table, entirely uninterested in your reaction. You can watch every video, study every photograph, and still arrive completely unprepared for what it actually feels like to be that close to something so large and so calm.

The giraffes know the house. The house knows the giraffes. The guests — at least for the first morning — just try to remember to keep breathing.

San Miguel de Allende is a 500-year-old UNESCO World Heritage city in the highlands of central Mexico - a bastion of colonial Spanish architecture where burros still traverse cobblestone streets to deliver milk and firewood.

Its UNESCO designation places it in the company of Venice, Florence, Salzburg and Prague as among the most historically and culturally significant cities in the world. Most Indian travellers have never heard of it. That’s about to change.

The sky here turns pink at dusk - specifically, a shade of dusty rose that the city’s sandstone cathedral seems designed to reflect. The neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the highest building in the city, was reportedly designed by a self-taught indigenous architect from a picture postcard of a European cathedral. It looks like something from a dream you’ve had before.

We pair San Miguel with the Rosewood - the only hotel built inside the UNESCO historic district, crafted by local artisans to look like it has always been part of the city’s 16th-century fabric.
