Want to experience 5000 years of Kazakhstan in under two hours?

Head to Almaty’s Central State Museum, one of the largest museums in Central Asia holding thousands of artefacts that tell the story of the Kazakh steppe and its people.

Inside, you’ll find exhibits on ancient nomadic cultures, Silk Road trade routes, traditional clothing and jewellery, and the evolution of Kazakhstan through the Soviet era into modern independence.

One of the biggest highlights is the famous Golden Man. This 18-year-old Saka prince was discovered in 1969 buried wearing a suit made of 4,000 gold plates, and is now one of the most powerful symbols of Kazakh identity.

You can also look at prehistoric fossils (including mammoth bones!), traditional nomadic clothing, horse gear, yurts, ancient coins, and artefacts that reveal how life on the steppe shaped the culture of this vast country.

Explore Kazakhstan’s history and heritage with Khaki Tours on the tours this autumn.

You might have visited the Jantar Mantar observatory in Jaipur, but there’s an even older astronomical observatory in Uzbekistan?

Long before the giant sundials of Jantar Mantar were built, a 15th-century ‘scientist-king’ of Samarkand, Ulugh Beg, built an observatory that became the greatest scientific centre of the medieval world. Its most impressive feature was a gigantic stone sextant — an arc so large it was taller than a five-storey building. Part of it was built deep into the ground to keep the instrument perfectly stable while astronomers measured the positions of stars.

Using nothing but shadows and stone, Ulugh Beg mapped over 1,000 stars and calculated the length of a year as 365 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 8 seconds. Even without modern computers or telescopes, he was off by only about 20 minutes from the value we use today!

After Ulugh Beg’s death, the observatory was destroyed in political turmoil and forgotten for centuries until archaeologists rediscovered it in 1908.

Walk beside the original stone arc and stand inside the trench where astronomers once measured the movements of the universe hundreds of years ago on the tour from 22-28 Sep, '26 with Khaki Tours, this autumn. You’ve probably seen plenty of forests, but have you ever seen one underwater?

Kazakhstan’s Kaindy Lake was created in 1911 when a powerful earthquake triggered a landslide that formed a natural dam. Rainwater slowly filled up inside the dammed area, flooding a spruce forest and giving rise to crystal-clear turquoise waters coloured by limestone deposits.

Today, the ghostly white tree trunks pierce the water’s surface like masts of a sunken ship while the branches remain underwater. ? The water stays so cold year-round that these submerged branches have remained intact for more than a century.

See Kazakhstan's natural beauty with Khaki Tours on the tours this autumn.

Most people think metros are just a way to travel from one destination to another; but the Tashkent Metro Stations are a destination in themselves.

Hidden underground, these stations feel more like palaces than platforms, with ornate marble walls, massive chandeliers, cosmic ceilings, and designs inspired by science, poetry, space, and Uzbek history. Every stop looks different, almost like hopping through mini museums while waiting for a train.
? For years, photography inside the Tashkent Metro was banned because the stations were considered strategic Soviet infrastructure. Today, they’re finally open to cameras and travellers.

Discover Uzbekistan’s heritage, both medieval and modern, on our tour from 22-28 Sep, '26. Read the tour brochure here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o6TQ7CQ8OfXbeL3ubl0IOsc7_iTtS-Zo?usp=sharing

Think Kazakhstan, and you think of the Soviet Union, vast steppes, the Silk Route and the Mongol invasion under Genghis Khan. But Kazakhstan’s history stretches even further, all the way at least to the Bronze Age. And you can see evidences of that at Tanbaly Tas, a couple of hours’ drive away from the city of Almaty.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has over 5000 petroglyphs etched on the rocks depicting a variety of animals, hunting scenes, and even sun gods! Archaeologists believe that the site was used for rituals by nomadic people 3000 years ago.

See a different side to Kazakhstan with Khaki Tours on the tours this autumn.

Most people wanting to visit Uzbekistan have the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara on their bucket list. But tucked away in the desert is Itchan Kala inside Khiva, a town that feels less like a sightseeing stop and more like a place that somehow continued existing slowly while the rest of the country sped up.

Think narrow clay streets, boho cafes, tiny carpet and ceramic shops tucked into old buildings, quiet courtyards, and bustling bazaars, all inside one small walled fortress. ? Khiva is one of the most intact Silk Road cities you can walk through today, which is why people often call it an ‘open-air museum.’ By sunset, the whole place turns into this warm dusty gold that makes you want to just sit on the top of the fort walls and not check your phone for a while.

Join Khaki Tours to watch this perfect sunset and live your Arabian Nights dream on the tour this autumn from 22-28 Sep, '26. ➡️Read the tour brochure here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o6TQ7CQ8OfXbeL3ubl0IOsc7_iTtS-Zo?usp=sharing

16/05/2026

W***y Wonka’s chocolate factory is imaginary, but the Rakhat Chocolate Factory in Kazakhstan isn’t. You won’t need a map to find it, just follow your nose. As you walk toward the eastern end of the Zhibek Zholy district in Almaty, the air begins to smell like rich cocoa, roasted nuts, and sweet vanilla.

Founded in 1942 during World War II, Rakhat, which translates to ‘pleasure,’ is Kazakhstan’s most famous confectionery brand. The factory initially began producing sweets for the Soviet Union and quickly became a beloved name across the region.

Walk into one of their shops and you’ll find rows of colourful candies, pralines, baursaki (fried dough balls dipped in chocolate) and the famous ‘Kazakhstan milk chocolate’ bars in their signature sky-blue and gold wrappers. It’s the perfect place to pick up colourful tins of assorted chocolates that feature beautiful illustrations of Almaty’s landmarks to take home as a souvenir. And the prices are very affordable!
Can’t wait to get there? Join Khaki Tours on the tour of Kazakhstan this autumn.
