Common Types of Fraud in the Tourism Sector
1. Fake Travel Agencies
β’ Scamsters pose as tour operators and collect advance payments for packages, tickets, or accommodations, then vanish.
β’ They may use flashy websites, social media ads, or even WhatsApp groups to lure customers.
2. Phony Hotel Listings
β’ Fraudulent websites list fake hotels or non-existent accommodations.
β’ Travelers pay in advance and find no hotel at the location or a different one altogether.
3. Taxi and Transport Scams
β’ Unofficial taxi drivers overcharge tourists or take longer routes.
β’ Some may even collaborate with shops or hotels to earn commissions.
4. Overpromised Tour Packages
β’ Packages with exaggerated features (luxury stays, adventure activities, etc.) at very low prices.
β’ In reality, these are poorly managed or do not include the promised services.
5. Timeshare and Investment Scams
β’ Tourists are offered investment opportunities in timeshares or holiday homes but are tricked into buying worthless properties or memberships.
6. Online Booking Scams
β’ Fake portals mimic genuine travel websites, collecting sensitive information or payments.
β’ Phishing emails or SMS links also lead to fraudulent payment pages.
7. Guides and Local Operator Scams
β’ Unlicensed guides or operators demand extra charges, or push tourists into spending at specific stores for commission.
