Dasara in Mysore is a grand and vibrant celebration, deeply rooted in the cultural and historical significance of the region. It officially begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, 3rd October 2024, and culminates on Vijayadashami Day, which falls on Saturday, 12th October 2024. The festival spans ten days, with the final day showcasing two of the major highlights: the Jamboo Savari (elephant procession) and the Torchlight Parade.
The entire city of Mysore is transformed into a sea of lights, with the Mysore Palace and key landmarks illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. Cultural programs featuring renowned artists, sports events, wrestling matches, poetry sessions, and film screenings are arranged in the palace grounds, attracting a large number of visitors. Additionally, a grand Dasara Exhibition is organized in Doddakere Maidana, where both government and private businesses set up stalls, promoting industrial and corporate ventures for several months.
A particularly unique feature of the festival is the presence of 12 specially trained elephants, known as the Dasara jumbos, which participate in the Jamboo Savari. These elephants march on the procession route from the Mysore Palace to Bannimantap twice daily, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle for the thousands of onlookers.
The highlight of the tenth day, Vijayadashami, is the grand procession, which reflects the royal heritage of Mysore. Led by the Dasara jumbos, this parade includes decorated horses, camels, and tableaux depicting various cultural and historical scenes. Musicians, dancers, and performers add color and energy to the parade, while the royal family, seated on an elaborately adorned elephant, offers their blessings to the people. The procession winds its way through the city, concluding at Bannimantap, where the Torchlight Parade takes place, bringing the ten-day festival to a grand and dramatic close
