Most people know Nanjangud as a temple town.
Very few know it was once feared as much as it was revered.

Long ago, Nanjangud was believed to be a border town between illness and healing. Villages around Mysuru avoided entering it after sunset. Not because of danger—but because people believed the town absorbed disease. Sick travellers were brought here deliberately, left near the Kapila River and the temple, with the belief that the land itself would pull the illness away from the body.

An unknown ritual existed: patients were not allowed to directly enter the temple at first. They had to walk around the town barefoot, letting the dust, water, and air “test” them. Only after this was one considered ready to face Lord Srikanteshwara. This is one reason the temple corridors are unusually wide—designed for slow, painful walks of recovery.

Another forgotten fact: ancient healers mixed temple ash with Kapila river sand to treat skin diseases. This practice predates modern medicine, and British records quietly noted Nanjangud as a “natural recovery zone,” without understanding why.

Nanjangud was never built to impress.
It was built to heal—silently, patiently, and without explanation.
