भीमताल एक त्रिभुजाकर झील है। यह उत्तरांचल में काठगोदाम से 10 किलोमीटर उत्तर की ओर है। इसकी लम्बाई 1674 मीटर, चौड़ाई 447 मीटर गहराई १५ से ५० मीटर तक है। नैनीताल से भी यह बड़ा ताल है। नैनीताल की तरह इसके भी दो कोने हैं जिन्हें तल्ली ताल और मल्ली ताल कहते हैं। यह भी दोनों कोनों सड़कों से जुड़ा हुआ है। नैनीताल से भीमताल की दूरी २२.५ कि. मी. है।

भीमताल की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता यह है कि यह सुन्दर घाटी में

ओर खिले हुए अंचल में स्थित है। इस ताल के बीच में एक टापू है, नावों से टापू में पहुँचने का प्रबन्ध है। यह टापू पिकनिक स्थल के रुप में प्रयुक्त होता है। अधिकाँश सैलानी नैनीताल से प्रातछ भीमताल चले जाते हैं। टापू में पहुँचकर मनपसन्द क भोजन करते हैं और खुले ताल में बोटिंग करते हैं। इस टापू में अच्छे स्तर के रेस्तरां हैं। उत्तर प्रदेश के मत्सय विभाग की ओर से मछली के शिकार की भी यहाँ अच्छी सुविधा है।
