AROGYAVIHAR. .... situated Patna Bihar INDIA
Excavations undertaken at 1951-55 by K. P Jayaswal Research Institute, Patna have unearthed brick structures of 4 "-5th Century A.D. identified as Arogyavihar or hospital- cum- monastery on the basis ofan inscribed terracotta sealing discovered from th place, Buddhist monasteries are known to have kept homes or sanatoriums But this is the first sealing discovered in support of it. This small oval sealing has on its upper half a tree probably Bodhi tree with conch on either side while the lower half bears the inscription in two lines reading "Sri Arogyavihare Bhikshusamghasya" in Gupta Brahmi Script. A red potsherd found in the debris also contains an incomplete inscription reading rogyavihare ". Significantly, another small potsherd of red color was foun 'inscribed with the word "Dhanvantareh", possibly referring to the name or the title of the presiding physician of Arogyavihar. Hence it can be surmised that this hospital was run by Dhanvantari, the famous physician of the Gupta period. The structure was erected on a well laid foundation. The width of the rooms was 10 feet but its length varied from 1012 to 21 ½ feet. Generally brickbats were used in the construction, complete bricks are very few. This may suggest that they were taken from the structures ofearlier period when they had become dilapidated. Ordinarily clay mortar was used. A hard floor ofbrick concrete was found, though ofirregular thickness. Several carved bricks were found in the debris. Probably Important finds from n the excavation of this area were copper coins, ornaments, antimony rods, beads of terracotta and stone, dices of terracotta and ivory, terracotta seals and sealings, toy carts, skin rubbers, terracotta figurines of human, bird and animals like.

The Dhamekha Stupa

This is the most conspicuous structure at Sarnath. Colonel Cunningham bore a shaft from the top centre of the stupa and discovered a stone tablet on which an inscription is written with the word Dhamekha, and mentions that this is the spot where the Buddha delivered his first sermon. Dhamekha seems to be a distorted form of Dharma Chakra which means turning the wheel of the Dharma. It is also said that at this spot the five ascetics who left Gautama Buddha in Bodh Gaya used to live in huts. The original stupa was constructed by Ashoka. The present size of the stupa is 31.3 m high and 28.3 m in diameter. The lower portion of the stupa is covered completely with beautifully carved stones. The design consists of a broad band of Sw****ka (fylfot) carved in different geometrical patterns with a finely chiselled lotus wreath, running over and below the swastikas.

The Dhamekha stupa is considered to be the sacred place where the voice of Buddhism was first heard. Many dignitaries of Buddhist countries visit this place for circumambulation of this sacred stupa and to worship the Buddha. Tibetans Buddhist circumambulate it chanting the mantra 'Om mani padme hum'. The first discourse of the Buddha was on the 'Wheel of Law'. The wheel symbolises samsara (world), the eternal round of existence which goes on and on, life after life because of ceaseless cravings and desire.

After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya the Buddha went to Sarnath; and it was here that he preached his first discourse in the deer park to set in motion the 'Wheel of the Dharma'. It is one of the most holy sites as in this place the stream of the Buddha's teaching first flowed.

Let go of the past and be willing to fully live in the present. Be willing to change and to grow. Often we are afraid to change, to grow, and because of lack of confidence we don’t try our best. We are responsible for ourselves and our lives, no matter what happened in the past, without blaming anybody.

Nalanda University:

Historical sources indicate that the University had a long and illustrious life which lasted almost continually for 800 years from the fifth to the twelfth century CE. It was a completely residential university with over 2,000 teachers and 10,000 students. The Nalanda ruins reveal through their architectural components the holistic nature of knowledge that was sought and imparted at this University. It suggests a seamless co-existence between nature and man and between living and learning.

The profound knowledge of the Nalanda teachers attracted scholars from places as distant as China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. These scholars have left records about the ambience, architecture and learning of this unique university. The most detailed accounts have come from Chinese scholars and the best known of these is Xuan Zang who carried back many hundred scriptures which were later translated into Chinese.

Close to the end of the twelfth century Nalanda was destroyed by invaders. The period from which Nalanda ceased to exist was a time that the great universities of the western world came into being, marking the shift in knowledge production and dissemination from the East to the West. Only Al Azhar in Cairo (972 CE), Bologna in Italy (1088 CE) and Oxford in the United Kingdom (1167 CE )had been founded before the destruction of Nalanda.
