On the 26th of May, our holy Gurudongmar lake was a part of the Himalaya Clean up campaign. This was possibly the highest clean up of the campaign. LTDC decided to join the campaign as an effort to understand the waste scenario of Lachen Dzumsa. The audit report being prepared from the clean up will hopefully help us identify areas of waste which needs our urgent attention. Previously it was mineral water PET bottles, this time we are aiming at multilayered packaged foods.
We definitely noticed how Lachen has beat plastic pollution of PET bottles following the ban on mineral water bottles. The results of the ban clearly is visible in the negligible amount of mineral water bottles we found in the lake area this time. ...
By the time we got back to Lachen for the audit, it was too late to conduct it so we decided to pursue this on the 27th! One of our major concerns at the lake was polyester and nylon fabricated prayer flags. We are eager to be moving to cotton prayer flags like the olden times!! This clean up pointed towards a hell lot of multilayered plastics and a significant amount of stray non-cotton prayer flags. We are found a good amount of glass bottles (and leeches in the mixed waste!) Center Fresh wrappers,although small, constitutes one of the most abundant littered plastic waste.
