20 December is International Human Solidarity Day, celebrating unity in diversity and encouraging finding new ways to promote solidarity and the spirit of sharing to face up to the challenge of poverty reduction and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Developing countries is increasingly recognizing tourism’s ability to generate socio-economic opportunities to reduce poverty, but tourism is still underrepresented in international aid flows. UNWTO is constantly working to close this ‘aid gap’ and to maximize the development potential of tourism in emerging and developing destinations worldwide.
