Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the sh**un Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408.
Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex.
Kinkakuji was built to echo the extravagant Kitayama culture that developed in the wealthy aristocratic circles of Kyoto during Yoshimitsu's times. Each floor represents a different style of architecture.
The first floor is built in the Shinden style used for palace buildings during the Heian Period, and with its natural wood pillars and white plaster walls contrasts yet complements the gilded upper stories of the pavilion.
The second floor is built in the Bukke style used in samurai residences, and has its exterior completely covered in gold leaf.
After viewing Kinkakuji from across the pond, visitors pass by the head priest's former living quarters (hojo) which are known for their painted sliding doors (fusuma), but are not open to the public.

We have travelled to so many countries and seen such architectural marvels but nothing has left us more awestruck than the classic Roman architecture. The sheer size, volume and intricacies in design is speechless.
The Roman Pantheon is one of the most well preserved ancient Roman buildings. It has been in continuous use throughout history and is still world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. Earlier used as a Roman temple, this structure is now a catholic church.
The Pantheon’s large circular domed Cella, with a conventional temple portico front, was unique in Roman architecture. Nevertheless it became a standard example when classical styles were revived and has been copied many times by later architects.

The Sayamaike Historical Museum desinged by Ar. Tadao Ando is located on the edge of Sayamaike Pond, an artificial lake that dates back to the 7th century.

The Sayamaike was constructed as an agricultural reservoir for flood control measures but was remodeled into a flood control dam. During that process, various kinds of precious heritage were found.

The museum is dedicated to the relics and techniques of ancient Japanese water engineering along with the history of the community, through conservation of the bank strata and exhibition of various historical items excavated from the pond.

Because of the site being about 15 meters below the bank Ando buried the building in a gradual continuation of the bank.

To maintain a homogenous atmosphere with the surrounding tranquility, and not stand out in the landscape, the external walls above ground are stone heaps.

"I decided to integrate the surrounding environment into the architecture, to create a place appropriate to the history that Sayamaike embraces, where the environment itself becomes a museum."/Tadao Ando.
