Maharaja Man Singh and companions playing polo, 1830, Jodhpur (44 x 39 cm)

This miniature painting from the museum’s collection shows Maharaja Man Singh (r. 1803-1843) and his three companions playing one of Jodhpur’s favourite royal sports; Polo.

The Maharaja is here distinguished by a halo and the entire group is flanked by attendants. The composition is ingeniously built around the polo sticks wielded by the four players. Paintings from the reign of Maharaja Man Singh and his successor Maharaja Takhat Singh often depict the rulers engaged in activities such as hunting or the celebration of festivals.

Mehrangarh Museum Trust houses a collection of different paintings that are famous all around the world.
