Rath Yatra – Jagannath Puri, Odisha, India.

Rath Yatra, or the Chariot Festival, is one of the most significant and ancient Hindu festivals, celebrated mainly in Puri, Odisha, in honor of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, their maternal aunt’s home, in elaborately decorated chariots.

The tradition dates back over a thousand years, with references found in ancient scriptures and texts. The 45-feet tall chariots, built afresh each year, are pulled by thousands of devotees, symbolizing community devotion and equality—everyone, regardless of caste or creed, is allowed to participate.

Rath Yatra holds deep spiritual significance. It represents Lord Krishna’s journey of love and compassion, allowing even those who are not allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum to have darshan (divine viewing). It’s a time when the Lord comes out to bless his devotees.
