Every trip has an impact on the places it visits. Most of the time that impact goes unexamined.

India's wildlife reserves, heritage communities, and craft traditions are extraordinary. They are also vulnerable to tourism done without thought.

We have been thinking about this for 10 years. Here is how we approach it, and what any traveller to India can do to make sure their trip leaves something good behind.

The lake doesn't move much. Neither do the hills around it.

Rewalsar isn't still because it's trying to be peaceful - it's just how the place has always been. The water holds the sky without disturbing it. Prayer flags shift in the wind, but nothing else seems to hurry. Monasteries sit where they've sat for generations. A gurudwara keeps its own quiet rhythm nearby.
