Mystical Meghalaya!

Mystical Meghalaya!

Some places are like dreams, they take you far away into the fairyland. I found state of Meghalaya to be one of those places. Indefinite green pastures of land, magical waterfalls and clouds hovering over. For a moment it's all blurry and hazy and the next moment wind blows away all of it leaving you astonished with the sight in front of you. .
This is one of my favourite click from Sohra (Cherrapunji) on the way to Nongriat. Meghalaya stole my heart away through its rich flora and fauna, it's waterfalls, the unexpected rain and the clouds, humungous varieties of butterflies, interesting stories of Khasi legends and their culture!

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet (340 metres),making it as the highest waterfall in India. The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water.
The name of the falls in Khasi Language meaning "Jump of Ka Likai" is linked to a legend about local women Likai who jumped off the cliff next to the falls; According to legends, in a village called Rangjyrteh, upstream from Nohkalikai Falls, a woman named Likai resided but had to remarry after her husband died. Ka Likai (Ka is the prefix given for the female gender in Khasi) was left with her infant girl with no means of income. So she had to become a porter herself. Her work required her to leave her daughter unattended for long intervals but when she would be at home she would spend most of her time taking care of her infant. Ka Likai, who married a second time, couldn’t pay attention to her second husband. The jealous husband killed the infant and cooked her meat after throwing away her head and bones. When Ka Likai returned home, she saw nobody in the house but except for a meal that had been prepared. She wanted to go look for her daughter but she ate the meat as she was tired from work.
Ka Likai usually had a betel leaf after her meals but she found a severed finger near the place where she usually cut betel nuts and betel leaves. Ka Likai realized what had happened in her absence and went mad with anger and grief and started running as she swung a hatchet in her hand. She ran off the edge of the plateau and the waterfall where she jumped from was named Nohkalikai Falls after her.

'Ornithologists concluded that migratory birds take hundreds of naps as they fly; they also practice unilateral eye closure, in which one eye closes, thereby permitting half the brain to sleep.' Is this what happens when photographers close one eye to look through a viewfinder? If so, they might be operating with only half a brain. Perhaps that explains...

Majuli is the largest inhabited river island in the world. This small village in the state of Assam is surrounded by Brahmaputra from all sides. Being in Majuli one could time travel to what India used to be 100 years back.

Majuli is only place to follow the Satriya culture where people have mastered the art of making exquisite bamboo masks to beautifully depict the Indian mythology. It is also home to mising tribe who follow donyi polo (God of sun and moon) religion (Also followed by some of the tribes in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh).

Mising people live a simplistic life and build bamboo homes (like the one in picture). The centre part of the hut is where the hearth exists. They earn their living through farming (mainly rice) and fishing. Village has numerous ponds and one could see grown ups and kids fishing using just a wooden stick (really no fancy equipments and they are very good at it).

Apart from their beautiful handwoven clothes, pottery without the pottery wheel, bamboo artefacts, Satriya culture and amazing hospitality; this is also place to the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets!

So, when are you planning your trip to Majuli?

In Bhutan, there is a king who rides a bicycle up and down the mountains. Like many stories you will hear in this tiny Himalayan nation, it sounds like a fairy tale.
In fact, it’s hard news...

In the vertiginous mountains of Bhutan, where happiness is akin to holiness, bicycling has become much more than a national pastime. It’s a spiritual journey.
