Nanny Falls - Portland, Jamaica
Nanny Falls: A 45 minute drive from Port Antonio takes you to Moore Town, home of the picturesque Nanny Falls. A true treasure, getting to the falls is like a fun treasure hunt on a natural trail. The 10 minute uphill hike begins at the point where vehicles no longer have access. Along the shaded trek, you can enjoy fruits like guava and Jamaican apples, if in season, and hydrate directly from the pure, freshwater springs. Large boulders and their rooted trees lead to the crystal clear waters flowing off rocks 30 feet into the pool below. The water cascading in the pool below creates a spraying mist that feels like a natural AC. Set on 600 acres, the sight of the greenery, rock formations, and naturally flowing waters is breath-taking.
Name after Nanny of the Maroons, the waterfalls is under the jurisdiction of the Moore Town Maroons. A National Heroine, legend has it that the 18th century leader of the Maroons and her warriors believed the waterfall had healing properties. While preparing for battle, if the injured were not healed after visiting the waters then they were unfit to fight. The Maroon Cultural Centre can organize a guide to this natural beauty.
