Pamban Bridge This place is most famous for Rama (Ramayanam) and the place is as old as many centuries, there is no one can predict and most of the peoples across the country come to visit Rameswaram.

Later on His heirs were ruling the province following a peace treaty with the sethupathis. From then, until the early 15th century the present territories of Ramanathapuram district — comprising the taluks Tiruvadanai, Paramakudi, Kamuthi, Mudukulathur, Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram — were included in the Pandyan Empire. For a short period, this area had been under the Chola Dynasty when Rajendra Chola I brought it under his territory in 1063 AD. In 1520 CE, the Nayaks of the Vijayanagara Empire — Maravar chieftains or Sethupatis who had been subordinate to the Pandyan Kings — took this area under their control from the Pandyan Dynasty and reigned till the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, family disputes over succession resulted in the division of Ramanathapuram. With the help of the King of Thanjavur in 1730 CE, one of the chieftains deposed the Sethupathi and became the Raja of Sivaganga. Acting upon the weakness of the Nayak rulers, the local chieftains (Palayakarars) became independent; the Raja of Sivagangai and the Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram were prominent among them. In 1730, Chanda Shahib of Karnataka captured Ramanathapuram. In 1741 the area came under the control of the Marathas and then under the Nizam in 1744 CE. Dissatisfied with the Nawab’s rule, the chieftains revolted, led by the last ruling Nayak, against the Nawab in 1752. By that time, the throne of Karnataka had two rivals, Chanda Shahib and Muhammed Ali, and this district was part of Karnataka. The British supported Chand Sahib, whilst the French supported Muhammed Ali. This paved the way for a series of conflicts in the southern part of the continent. In 1795, the British deposed Muthuramalinga Sethupathi and took control of the administration of Ramanathapuram. In 1801 Mangaleswari Nachiyar was made the Zamindar of Sivaganga. After the passing of the Queen Velu Nachiyar, the Maruthu brothers took charge by paying regular revenue to the East India company. In 1803 the Maruthu Pandiyar of Sivaganga revolted against the British in collaboration with Kattabomman of Panchalamkurichi. Colonel Agnew captured and hanged the Maruthu brothers and made Gowri Vallabha Periya Udaya Thevar as Zamindar of Sivaganga. After the fall of Tippu Sultan, the British took control and imprisoned the Nawab. In 1892 the Zamindari system was abolished and a British collector was appointed for administration. In 1910, Ramanathapuram was formed from portions of Madurai and Tirunelveli districts, with J.F. During the British period this district was called “Ramnad”; the name continued after independence. Later the district was renamed as Ramanathapuram to be in conformity with the Tamil name for this region."Ramnad" is also known as "Mugavai"(face) since it acts as the entry point for River "Vaigai".

Ramanathaswamy Temple
The Holy abode of the Hindu God, Shri Ram (addressed so with all respect & humility) is a virtual paradise for the devout. No Hindu’s journey is complete without a pilgrimage to both Varanasi and Rameswaram for the culmination of his quest for salvation and is hallowed by the epic ‘Ramayana’. Folklore mentions about God Ram’s presence in this land, after his 14-year exile.

Local legend has it that Shri Ram was helped back into Rameswaram and into India by his brother Lakshman and Hanuman along with his band of thousands of monkeys, after finally emerging victorious against the demon – Ravana. They helped build a bridge with rocks from the sea and shores to cross the ‘Sethu canal’ and reach Lanka. Lord Rama is also believed to have sanctified this place by worshipping and glorifying Lord Shiva and hence marks the confluence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism and is thus revered by both Shaivites and Vaishnavites alike and thus there is a strong belief that bathing in the 22 ‘Theerthams’ or natural springs is a step forward in enlightenment. Therefore, Rameswaram has rightly been declared as one of the National Pilgrim Centres in the count.

The Ramanathaswamy temple by itself is a delight for every tourist. With its magnificent, imposing structure, long corridors, aesthetically carved pillars, the temple is adorned with a towering 38-metre ‘Gopuram’. The temple itself was built by rulers since the 12th century with Sethupathy Maravar beginning the construction of the grand Ramanathaswamy temple that boasts of the ‘Third Corridor’, completed by his successor, Maravar – the longest one in Asia with a 197-metre span from East to West and a 133-metre span from South to North, the third largest in the world! It is said that Swamy Vivekananda offered prayers at this temple in 1897. It is also one of the twelve Jyothirlinga temples, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam.

The history of the kings of Ramanathapuram is marked by the rise and fall of the Sethupathi dynasty, and the British invasion and takeover of the region.

Sethupathi dynasty
The male rulers of Ramanathapuram were called Sethupathi, which means "protector of the bridge".
The first recorded Sethupathi was Saidaikan, who ruled from 1606–1621.
The Sethupathis gained independence from the Madurai Nayaks in 1702.
The Sethupathi rulers could quickly mobilize a large army of 30,000–40,000 men.

British invasion
In 1795, the British deposed King Muthuramalinga Sethupathy.
The British imprisoned the king in Trichy fort and then invaded the region.
The British exploited the citizens, which led to widespread resentment.
The British converted the kingdom into a zamindari in 1803.

Zamindari system
The British abolished the zamindari system in 1892 and appointed a British Collector to administer the region.
The female rulers of Ramanathapuram were called Nachiyar.

Rani Velu Nachiyar & Kuyili of Sivaganga

Indian Marxist History books will never tell you who Rani Velu Nachiyar was, or that she was the first Indian queen to have bravely chased out the British forces. Neither will they mention her army commander Kuyili, who gave the British East India Company a real run for their money!

Rani Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga (now in Tamil Nadu) was the princess of Ramanatapuram. In Tamil Nadu, she is known as ‘Veeramangai’ meaning brave woman.

Born on January 3, 1730, she was the only child of her parents, who ruled the Ramnad kingdom.

Consequently, Velu Nachiyar received full military training since childhood and was married to the king of Sivaganga.

She assumed the throne of Sivaganga in 1780 after her husband was murdered by British soldiers and the Nawab of Arcot.

Rani Velu Nachiyar, the brave women of India, formed an army and successfully led a suicide attack on British troops in 1780, with help from local allies.

Her Army Commander, Kuyili doused herself with flammable oil and blew up the British arsenal in a Self Immolation attack.

Rani Velu Nachiyar is the first to fight against British occupation.

Kuyili, her commander, holds the distinction as being the first woman who self immolated herself to blow up the British weapons stored on the premises of the divine Rajarajeshwari temple.
