The forest department in Uttarakhand shifted an adult tigress from Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve to Rajaji Tiger Reserve in Dehradun on Wednesday.

Co-living with the apex predator

Recently, I was on a trip to the famed forests of Tadoba after an unusually long hiatus of 9-10 months for reasons known to the world. It was exhilarating to finally be back on safari to track and photograph the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger, the apex predator in Indian forests but what made the experience enlightening was seeing how the locals co-exist with these predators and in turn have supported Tiger conservation directly and indirectly over the years. Seen here is a powerful young Tiger crossing the main road that leads to Tadoba from Chandrapur, in the presence of villagers on motor bikes, never intending to cause any harm to them. It is not uncommon for these locals to encounter wildlife on this road be it day or night, on their routine errand running trips to the nearest town of Chandrapur, but both the people and wildlife have largely managed to co-exist without too many incidents of human-animal conflict, thus paving way for one of the most fascinating success stories of tiger conservation that Tadoba is.
