उनकी सांस्कृतिक वेशभूषा में शामिल लोग अधिकतर चरवाहा समुदाय और किसान हैं।

कांस्य युग को इतिहास में स्वर्ण काल ​​के रूप में माना जा सकता है। हड़प्पन, मिस्र, मेसोपोटामिया और चीन की सभ्यताओं ने हमें कई स्थायी स्मारक और ऐतिहासिक अभिलेख प्रदान किए जो आज भी याद किए जाते हैं।

धोलावीरा भारत में राखीगढ़ी के पश्चात् सिंधु सभ्यता का सबसे बड़ा पुरास्थल है। पुरातत्वविद् जगपति जोशी द्वारा इसकी खोज साल 1966-67 में की गई किंतु इस स्थल की व्यापक खुदाई 1990 में आर.एस. बिस्ट द्वारा करवाई गई जिसके पश्चात् ही हमें ज्ञात हुआ कि आज से लगभग 5 हजार वर्ष पूर्व यह भारत के सबसे व्यस्ततम महानगरों में से एक था। यह एक प्रमुख व्यापारिक केंद्र था। यही कारण है कि एक इतिहासकार ने इसे ‘महाजनों का शहर’ कहा है। अन्य हड़प्पाई नगरों के विपरीत यह नगर तीन भागों में विभाजित था- दुर्ग (Citadel), मध्य नगर तथा निचला नगर। इसके अतिरिक्त इसके चहारदीवारी के चारों ओर भी कुछ बस्तियों के अवशेष मिले हैं, जिसे उपनगर कहा गया है। धौलावीरा में बेहतर नगर नियोजन तथा बेहतर जल निकासी तथा सीवेज व्यवस्था जैसी विशेषताएँ तो हैं ही किंतु जो चीज़ इसे अन्य पुरास्थलों की तुलना में विशेष स्थान दिलवाती है वह है इसकी बेहतर जल संचयन अथवा जल प्रबंधन की व्यवस्था। इस क्षेत्र में वर्षा की मात्रा औसत से कम होती थी किंतु फिर भी इनकी वाटर हार्वेस्टिंग तकनीक के कारण इतने बड़े नगर के लिये पानी की कमी नहीं पड़ती थी। यहाँ पर पत्थरों की सहायता से वर्षा के पानी के संचयन के लिये जलाशयों (Reservoires) की एक श्रृंखला बनाई गई थी। नगर के उत्तरी भाग में मानसर एवमं दक्षिणी भाग में मनहर नाम की दो मानसूनी नालों के पानी को संग्रह किया जाता था।

I got the privilege of guiding them all and I took them to visit our Dholavira Village along with our traditional They were also dressed in clothes and they were also happy seeing this art. Dholavira is famous because of the remains of the Harappan Civilisation that have been found here. One of the important archaeological sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation, Dholavira is located at the Khadir Bet island in the Rann of Kutch. It is locally known as Timba Prachin Mahanagar Kotada. The main attraction of Dholavira—the Harappan city—has been excavated at this site. Giving the archaeologists a vivid idea about the civilisation, their language, culture and the architectural plans followed to build the city, Dholavira always remains an important discovery to the historians.

धोलावीरा गांव के पास पांच हजार साल पहले विश्व का यह प्राचीन महानगर था। ४,००० साल पहले इस महानगर के पतन की शुरुआत हुई। यहाँ उत्तर से मनसर और दक्षिण से मनहर छोटी नदी से पानी जमा होता था। हड़प्पा, मोहन जोदडो, गनेरीवाला, राखीगढ, धोलावीरा तथा लोथल ये छः पुराने महानगर पुरातन संस्कृति के नगर है। जिसमें धोलावीरा और लोथल भारत में स्थित है। इस जगह का खनन पुरातत्त्व विभाग के डॉ॰ आर. एस. बिस्त ने किया था। धोलावीरा का १०० हेक्टेयर क्षेत्र में विस्तार था। प्रांत अधिकारियों के लिये तथा सामान्य जन के लिये अलग-अलग विभाग थे, जिसमें प्रांत अधिकारियों का विभाग मजबूत पत्थर की सुरक्षित दीवार से बना था, जो आज भी दिखाई देता है। अन्य नगरों का निर्माण कच्ची पक्की ईंटों से हुआ है। धोलावीरा का निर्माण चौकोर एवं आयताकार पत्थरों से हुआ है, जो समीप स्थित खदानो से मिलता था। ऐसा लगता है कि धोलावीरा में सभी व्यापारी थे और यह व्यापार का मुख्य केन्द्र था। यह कुबेरपतियों का महानगर था। भूकंप के कारण सम्पूर्ण क्षेत्र ऊँचा-नीचा हो गया। आज के आधुनिक महानगरों जैसी पक्की गटर व्यवस्था पांच हजार साल पहले धोलावीरा में थी। पूरे नगर में धार्मिक स्थलों के कोई अवशेष नहीं पायें गए हैं। इस प्राचीन महानगर में पानी की जो व्यवस्था की गई थी वह अद्दभुत है। आज के समय में बारिस मुश्किल से होती है। बंजर जमीन के चारो ओर समुद्र का पानी फैला हुआ है। इस महानगर में अंतिम संस्कार की अलग-अलग व्यवस्थाएँ थी।

Dholavira is an Indus Valley Civilization city.Abandoned today, it was once a large urban settlement at the southern end of the Civilization whose best known cities are places such as Harappa, Mohenjo Daro (both in Pakistan) and Rakhi Garhi (in Haryana, India).The excavated remains at Dholavira are significant as they include a large citadel and several interconnected water reservoirs, which would have played an increasingly critical role in what eventually became an arid region.

सिन्धु घाटी के लोगों की भाषा एवं लिपि

हड्डपा, मोहन जोदडो तथा धोलावीरा के लोग कौन सी भाषा बोलते थे और किस लिपि का उपयोग करते थे, अज्ञात है। यहाँ विभिन्न प्रकार के लगभग ४०० मूल संकेत पायें गए हैं। साधारणतया शब्दों क़ी लिखावट दायें से बायीं दिशा क़ी ओर है। इनमें से अधिकतर लिपि मुहर (पत्थर पर उभरीं हुई प्रतिकृति) तथा छाप (मिट्टी क़ी पट्टिका पर दबाकर बनाई गई प्रतिकृति) के रूप में पायी गई है। इनमें से कुछ लिपि तांबें और कांसे के प्रस्तर तथा कुछ टेराकोटा और पत्थर के रूप में पायी गई है। ऐसा लगता है कि इन मुहरों का उपयोग व्यापार और आधिकारिक प्रशासकीय कार्य के लिए किया जाता रहा होगा। इन लिपियों को देखकर ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि यह किसी सामूहिक उत्सव (मेला, किसी प्रकार का सामूहिक वाद-विवाद जिसमें अनेक समूह के नेताओं ने भाग लिया हो) के पोस्टर और बैनर के रूप में प्रयुक्त किया गया हो और किसी विशेष समूह के नामों को इंगित करता हो।

However, one of the most exciting discoveries at Dholavira is a large wooden "signboard" just outside the north entrance to the citadel. This is actually one of the longest Indus inscriptions known. There are 10 symbols in the panel, each one is about 37 centimetres high and the board on which the letters were inscribed appears to have been about 3 meters long. One of the symbols is repeated 4 times. The symbols are made of white gypsum used like mosaic tiles, attached to a wooden background. At some point the wooden sign fell face down in the dirt, eventually rotting away but leaving the bricks in place in the ground. Bisht has said that this sign was in use in Stage IV, that belongs to the classical Harappan culture. Based on its location near the gate, this large inscription has been called a "sign board," suggesting that ancient Indus gateways, or at last this one, could have had some sort of signs associated with it that visitors to the city saw before or as they entered. However until the Indus script is deciphered, what the sign is saying still remains a mystery.
