PANCH - FIVE KEDARNATH PILGRIMAGE TREK

Panch Kedar is the five different forms of the Hindu god Shiva, in the hills of Uttarakhand and are known as Kedarnath (3584 mts),Madmaheshwar (3289 mts), Tungnath(3810 mts),Rudranath(2286 mts) and Kalpnath(2134 mts).

KEDARNATH ::

Kedarnath is known as kedarkhand,the Abode of lord Shiva.Kedarnath has one of the 12 jyotirlingas.In the holy book of hindu,the Mahabharata ,the pandavas built the temple to atone for their sins after the battle at kurukshetra.The kedarnath temple is older ,some claim ,originally over 800 years old,and more impressive than Badrinath,built of stone ,unpainted but curved outside.

MADMAHESHWAR::
Madmaheshwar is one of panch Kedar ,known as abode of lord Shiva.after visting kedarnath ,return to guptakashi and procced to ukhimath to start the 24 km trek to madmaheshwar from mansuna village and then procced to ransi and continue following the Ganga through the kedarnath wildlife park with its contrasting grassland and dense wooded hillsides.,from the near a temple the ,at 3030 m which has 3 streams flowing by it ,you can see chaukhamba peak ( 7,164 m).

TUNGNATH::
Tungnath (3680 m) ,the hihest temple ,surrounded by picturesque mountains , Nanda devi,neelkanth,kedrantha peaks.Tungnath is reached by trekking from chopta ,passing through villages,fields and wooded hills before reaching meadows with Rhododendrons .

RUDRANATH ::
Rudranath(3030 m) is the name of lord Shiva ,to reach rudranath you can get to gopeshwar by road and then on to sagar(05km) for the 24 k trek covering stony and lash green ground,thick oak and rhododendron forests and wild animals like musk deer ,Himalayan bear and mountain goats etc.The grey stone Rudranth temple has the Rudraganga(ganges)flowing by it and from the temple you can have a view of world famous peak ,Nandadevi,trisul,hathi parbat peaks and surrounding small lakes glistening and fantastic.

KALPESHWAR::
Kalpeshwar (2100m) near joshimath a world famous for ski and panaromic view of Himalayan peaks.This is only the panch kedar which is accessible throughout the year.It postion over looking the urgam valley offers beautifull views of the Garhwal's most fertile region with its terrace cultivation of rice ,wheat and vegetables.

The trek starts from from Rishikesh and goes on to Gaurikund.Where one can have a refreshing bath in the hot water sulphur springs after completing the trek.The trek from gaurikund to rambara winds along the the river mandakini through forests and across beautifull waterfalls.
The trek from Kedarnath to Vasuki tal is a continuous ascent along a goat track and offers a panoramic view of the Chaukhamba peaks.The final trek to vasuki tal is down hill for 01km ,at the bottom of this ,one can see rectangular slabs of rock .

Day 01): Delhi - Rishikesh (230 kms/6 ½ hrs)
check into the hotel. In the evening visit Temples, Laxman Jhoola and Triveni Ghat for Arti darshan. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 02): Rishikesh - Pipalkoti (1219 mts/3998 ft) 218 kms/7-8 hrs
Morning after breakfast drive to Pipalkoti via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karanprayag, Nandprayag. On arrival check in at the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 03): Pipalkoti - Helang - Urgam (2134 mts/7000 ft) 9 kms trek/3-4 hrs
In the morning after breakfast drive 15 kms to reach Helang. From her we will start our trek up to Urgam Village. We will cross Alaknanda River via Road Bridge. The trek pass through the dense forest, murmuring water falls along with KalpGanga. Urgam Valley is famous for its apple orchard, terraced fields and potatoes. Evening free to explore the fascinating Urgam Valley. Dinner and night stay in tents.

Day 04): Urgam - Kalpeshwar - Urgam (2 kms one side)
An early morning walk up to the first Kedar (one of Panch Kedar) during your trek. For this trek you have to prepare with packed lunch. The locks (hair) of lord Shiva worshiped in this temple. From here you will have the striking views of valley with terraced fields and lush green forests. Later return trek to Urgam. Dinner and overnight stay in tent.

Day 05): Urgam - Kalgot (2215 mts/7265 ft)
After an early breakfast trek up to Kalgot Village through dense forest, lush green meadows. This is the tough day. Evening arrival at Kalgot village. Meet the locals, know their culture etc. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 06): Kalgot - Rudranath (2286 mts/7498 ft)
Morning trek up to the temple of Sri Rudranath, another form of lord Shiva. In this temple The face of the Shiva is worshiped. From here we can see a splendid view of Hathi Parvat, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, Trishuli and other group of peaks. You can also visit the Suryakund, Chandrakund, Tarakund which is located nearby the temple. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 07): Rudranath - Sagar - Mandal (18 kms trek/8 kms drive)
Morning after breakfast trek down to Sagar Village through the dense forest and meadows. Up on arrival at Sagar drive to Mandal. Mandal is also known Cherapunji of Garhwal. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 08): Mandal - Chopta (2900 mts/9512 ft) - Tungnath (19 kms/2 hrs/trek 3.5 kms
Morning after breakfast drive to Chopta. Chopta is situated at an altitude of 2900 m from the sea level. The place provides a panoramic view of the Himalayas and the surrounding areas. Up on arrival at Chopta trek to Tungnath (the third Kedar) with packed lunch. Tungnath is situated at the height of 3680 mts from the sea level the highest in India. the trek is three kms upward. Enroute you will find lush green meadows and you can see the entire range of snow clapped Himalayan range. Upon arrival at Tungnath Temple and visit the temple. After relax one can trek Chandrashila peak 1 kms ahead. Dinner and overnight stay in Tungnath.

Day 09): Tungnath - Chopta - Jagasu - Gaundhar
In the morning trek back to Chopta and from here drive to Jagasu (45 kms/2 hrs). From here trek up to Gaundhar. The confluence of Madmaheshwar Ganga and Makandya Ganga is the last place that is worth a visit before one reaches Madmaheshwar. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 10): Gaundhar - Madhmaheshwar (3289 mts/10788 ft)
Morning after an early breakfast start trek (18 kms/5-6 hrs) up to Madhya Maheshwar (the forth Lord Shiva temple of Panch Kedar). It is believed that the navel mid part of the body reappeared at this shrine after disappearing at Kedarnath. On arrival set camp here. Here you see the magnificent view of Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and the Neelkanth peaks. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 11): Madhmaheshwar - Gaundhar
In the morning trek back to Gaundhar. Dinner and overnight stay in tent.

Day 12): Gaundhar - Jagasu - Guptkashi
After an early breakfast 12 km trek to Jagasu and from drive to Guptkashi (30 kms). Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 13): Guptkashi - Gaurikund - Kedarnath (3584 mts/11756 ft)
Morning after breakfast drive to Gaurikund and from here 14 km trek up to Sri Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The trek is passes through beautiful surroundings. On arrival check in at guest house. Evening explore the surroundings. Dinner and overnight stay in Guest house.

Day 14): Kedarnath - Gaurikund - Rudraparyag
Morning after breakfast visit Kedarnath temple, trek down to Gaurikund and drive to Rudraprayag through river Mandakini. Check into hotel. Evening visit the confluence of Alaknanda & Mandakini Rivers. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 15): Rudraparyag - Haridwar (160 kms/4-5 hrs) -Delhi
Morning after breakfast drive to Haridwar via Devprayag (Confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. From here the Holy River Ganges starts). From Haridwar catch a train for Delhi. Arrival at Delhi by night. Upon arrival at Delhi back to home.

DAY 1 : HARIDWAR - BARKOT (220 KMS/7 HOUR)
Drive to Barkot via Dehradun & Mussoorie. Enroute visit Kempty Fall and others later drive straight to your Hotel for night halt.

DAY 2 : BARKOT - YAMUNOTRI – BARKOT –UTTARKASHI {36+100 KMS DRIVE & 5KMS TREK (ONE SIDE)}
Drive to Hanuman Chatti, from here you have to take local jeeps for Janki chatti (It helps to reduce the trek upto 8 kms), trek start from here to Yamunotri (5kms). Either by walk or by horse or by Doli at own cost. Arr. Yamunotri, One can cook rice by packing it in a cloth and dipping it in the hot water of the hot kund. Pilgrims take this cooked rice home as "Prasad". Here near the temple "Pooja" can be offered to Divya Shila, After taking bath in Jamunabai Kund's warn water and having "Darshan" of pious "Yamunaji" returning to Hanumanchatti. Later drive back to Barkot then procced to uttarkashi. Overnight stay at Hotel.
Hanuman Chatti: The confluence of Hanuman Ganga & Yamuna River.
Yamunotri Temple: Maharani Gularia of Jaipur built the temple in the 19th Century. It was destroyed twice in the present century and rebuilt again.
Surya Kund: There are a Number of thermal springs in the vicinity of the temple, which flows into numerous pools. The most important of these is Surya Kund.
Divya Shila: A rock pillar, worshipped before entering the Yamunotri Temple.
Uttarkashi: Situated at the bank of river Bhagirathi. The temple of Lord Vishwanath is located here where a massive iron trident is erected. The other important temples situated here are Ekadash Rudra, Bhairav, Gyaneshwar and Goddess Kuteti Devi.

DAY 3 : UTTARKASHI - GANGOTRI - UTTARKASHI (100 KMS/3 HOUR EACH SIDE)
We proceed to Gangotri (3048 mts), enroute we enjoy picturesque Harsil village, Bhagirathi River and the most magnificent view of the Himalayas. After Gangotri Darshan we return to Uttarkashi. overnight stay at Uttarkashi.
Gangotri Temple: The temple, constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th Century, is situated on the right bank of Bhagirathi.
Submerged Shivling: Submerged in the river, this natural rock Shivling is the place where, according to mythology Lord Shiva sat when he received the Ganga in his matted lock. It is visible in winter months when water level decreases.
Kedar Ganga Sangam: Around 100 Yards from the Ganga Temple flows the river Kedar Ganga. Starting from the Kedar Valle, this river meets the Bhagirathi on its left bank.

DAY 4 : UTTARKASHI – RUDRAPRAYAG- GUPKASHI (210+ KMS/8 HOUR)
Early morning, drive to Guptkashi. Check in Hotel, night halt.
Rudraprayag: It is the confluence of river Mandakini and river Alaknanda.
Temples: Rudranath and Chamunda Devi, Koteshwar Temple (3 Kms).
Guptkashi: Temple very famous ,as related kedarnath temple ,this is the hidden place of Lord shiva.

DAY 5 : GUPTKASHI - KEDARNATH (30KMS BY ROAD & 16KMS TREK)
Morning drive to Gaurikund, Trek start from Gaurikund to Kedarnath (3584 mts) on foot or on by pony / Doli / helicopter. Tour members should carry personal medicines, heavy woolen, toiletries and clothes for an overnight halt at Kedarnath. Check in Hotel. Later visit Kedarnath Temple. Night halt.
Gaurikund: At a distance of 5kms from Sonprayag and at an altitude of 1982 meters., one can take bath in the hot water pond here and visit the Gauri Temple. This is the place where Goddess Parvathi meditated to attain Lord Shiva. It is the base for a trek to Kedarnath. Kedarnath: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva, the protector and the destroyer. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The r! emaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar and his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned shrines are treated as Panch Kedar.

DAY 6 : KEDARNATH - GUPTKASHI (14KMS DOWN TREK & 30KMS)
Early morning, after Temple Darshan trek down to Gaurikund. Later, drive to guptkashi. Check in Hotel at Guptkashi. Night Halt.

DAY 07 : GUPKASHI - BADRINATH (210 KMS/8 HOURS)
Drive to Badrinath via Joshimath. Check in Hotel. Later at evening visit Badrinath Temple for Aarti.
Overnight stay. Badrinath one of the 'Four Dhams' is one of the most celebrated pilgrimage spots of the country and is situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters, guarded on either side by the two mountain ranges known as Nar & Narayan with the towering Neelkanth Peak providing a splendid backdrop. This revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries. Thus the place got the name "Badri van", meaning "forest of berries".
Tapt Kund: Natural thermal springs on the bank of the river Alaknanda, where it is customary to bathe before entering the Badrinath temple.
Narad Kund: A recess in the river, near Tapt Kund, forming a pool from where the Badrinath idol was recovered.
Brahama Kapal: A flat platform on the bank of river Alaknanda. Hindus perform proppitiating rites for their deceased ancestors.
Sheshnetra: 1.5kms. away is a boulder having an impression of the legendary serpent, better known as the Sheshnag's eye.
Charanpaduka: 3kms. away is a beautiful meadow where the footprint of Lord Vishnu is seen on a boulder.
Mata Murty Temple: Devoted to the mother of Sri Badrinathji. Other important temples include Sesh Netra Temple, Urvashi Temple and Charanpaduka. Mana Village: Inhabited by an Indo-Mongolian tribe, it is the last Indian village before Tibet.
Vasundhara: As the name suggests, vasundhara is a magnificent water fall. This place is 5 kms. from Badrinath out of which 2 kms. is motorable upto Mana.
Bhim Pul: On the other side of Mana village, a massive rock forming a natural bridge, lies over the roaring Saraswati river. It presents a spectacular view of water thundering down through the narrow passage under the rock and is believed to have been placed there by Bhim, the second eldest among the five Pandava brothers.
Vyas Gufa (cave): Near Mana Village, this is a rock-cave where Ved Vyas is believed to have composed the Mahabharata and the pauranic commentaries.

DAY 08 : BADRINATH – JOSHIMATH (44 KMS/3 HOURS)
Early morning, pilgrims after having a bath in the Taptkund have the Darshan of Badrivishal. Brahamakapal is significant for Pinddan Shraddh of ancestors (Pitrus). There are other interesting sight seeing spot like Mana, Vyas Gufa, Maatamoorti, Charanpaduka, Bhimkund and the "Mukh" of the Saraswati River. Just within the three kms of Badrinathjee. Later drive back to Joshimath. Check in Hotel. Overnight stay at Joshimath.
Joshimath is situated on the slopes above the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. Of the four 'Maths' established by Adi Shankaracharya, Joshimath is in the Badrinath to Joshimath and installed in the temple for people to worship. There are many temples in the township most important is the temple of Nir Singh in commotion of Lord Vishnu. The left arm of this deity is with time and the popular belief holds that the day the the arm completely withers Badrinath valley will cease to exist and the Gods will transfer the residence into the neighboring Niti Valley at Bhavishya Badri. Joshimath is connected by regular bus service to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Badrinath and many other centres in the region.

DAY 09 : JOSHIMATH - RISHIKESH (254KMS/8HR) / KIRTINAGAR – RISHIKESH (100KMS/3HR)
Early morning, visit Narsingh Temple & Shankracharaya Math. Later, Drive back to Rishikesh. Check in Hotel. Overnight stay.
Rishikesh, the 'place of sages' is a celebrated spiritual town on the bank of Ganga and is surrounded by Shivalik range of the Himalayas on three sides. It is said that when Raibhya Rishi did hard penances, God appeared by the name of " Hrishikesh " and this area hence firth came to be known as Rishikesh.
