BREAKING: World-renowned mountaineer Nirmal "Nims" Purja is feared missing after a massive avalanche struck his climbing expedition on Broad Peak, Pakistan.

Purja — who made history in 2019 by summiting all 14 of the world's 8,000m peaks in under 7 months, then repeated the feat without supplemental oxygen — was leading a roped team of 10 when the avalanche hit on July 30. Also missing: four Nepali guides, a Chinese climber, an Omani climber, and a Pakistani guide with his American client.

Rescue teams and helicopters are mobilizing as weather allows. Our thoughts are with the climbers and their families.

10 climbers are currently missing after Thursday's avalanche on Broad Peak (8,047m), Pakistan:

🇳🇵 Nirmal Purja "Nimsdai"
🇳🇵 Yukta Gurung
🇳🇵 Nima Sherpa
🇳🇵 Gyalu Sherpa
🇳🇵 Nwang Thendu Sherpa
🇳🇵 Kili Pemba Sherpa
🇵🇰 Sohail Sakhi
🇺🇸 Mallory Geis
🇴🇲 Nadhira Al Harthy
🇨🇳 Wang Zhong

Six nations, one rope team. Rescue efforts are ongoing as weather permits. Holding space for these climbers and their families right now.

This is a significant update — 4 bodies have already been recovered, and there's a possible sign of life from Purja's tracker.

🚁 RESCUE UPDATE: Broad Peak Avalanche

Search and rescue is in full swing after Thursday's avalanche struck a 10-person team between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on Broad Peak (8,047m).

What's happening on the ground:
Pakistan has mobilized helicopters, drones, and ground teams to the site. Nepal's ambassador to Pakistan, Rita Dhital, confirmed the multi-agency response. An overland rescue effort has brought some climbers back to base camp — but 4 bodies have been recovered so far.

A flicker of hope: Movement was reportedly detected on Nirmal Purja's tracking device after the avalanche, and the Alpine Club of Pakistan says GPS signals are showing for four of the climbers — a possible sign some may still be alive.

The search continues as weather and terrain allow. We're following this closely and holding hope for the climbers and their families.

On July 20, 2026, the Supreme Court struck down the 8-year-old ban that had quietly killed this trek — the blanket rule against overnight camping in alpine meadows, in place since 2018. Roopkund can't be done without a night at Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal; take that away and the trail simply stops existing.

The Court called the old rules "impractical" and dropped the camping ban, the 200-tourist cap per meadow, and the plan to turn the bugyals into national parks. Same trail, same skeleton lake, same reason people have been chasing this one for years — just legal again.

Most packing mistakes at altitude aren't made on the trail.

They're made three weeks before — when you're at home, ordering gear from a list written by someone who's never been above 4,000m.

We've seen it all, Fit trekkers. Good intentions. Wrong kit.

The five mistakes in this carousel aren't obvious. That's the problem. Swap out cotton for merino and you think you're sorted. But there are four other calls you're probably getting wrong — and two of them can make acclimatisation significantly harder above Namche.

Save this post before you finalise your pack. Then DM us "PACKING" if you want a quick kit review before your trek.
