STORY OF MONAL HOME STAY
UTTAREY WEST SIKKIM -
In the corner of Sikkim's western wilderness, where the majestic Himalayas whisper secrets to the wind, lies the quaint village of Uttarey, a tranquil haven nestled in the valley's picturesque landscape. Sharing the friendly border with our neighboring county Nepal. Our family's story began in this sleepy village, surrounded by lush forests of rhododendrons, magnolias, and oaks, etc., where the yak herders would occasionally trek through the valley with their line of yaks, their bells jingling in harmony with the whistling sound of the yak man, as they exchanged dairy products for essentials.
The village life was mainly depended upon agriculture and the land.
Occasionally european trekkers were seen during the trek season & the locals used to assist them mostly as the porters & porter's guide & yak man.
As the years passed, the village began to transform. The Sikkim government recognized Uttarey's potential for tourism development and initiated plans to create an artificial lake on the dried alpine lake bed. Envisioning a brighter future where tourism would bring prosperity to the valley.
With the govt. approval & joint aggrement with the locals, the issue of compensation & site allotment at the future market place and with a dream to welcome travelers from far and wide, we dismantled our old typical house and rebuilt it with the same wooden materials at the suitable site on the way to Tenzing & Hillary Park Road just above the hill side of the valley, overlooking the Uttarey valley & the holy peak - Neydham, envisioning a home stay that would offer great view, comfortable stays, cultural experiences, and delicious local organic meals. Years later, a modern concrete house was added, blending tradition with modernity, and hence Monal Home Stay was born.
Uttarey Valley has now come up with numerous home stay with their own own stories. And day by day now after many years the numbers of tourist are seen gradually increasing both for trekking as well as tour trip, however I would say Uttarey is still offbeat place with limited tourist.
