Massive bills, powerful wingbeats, and an unmistakable presence in the treetops — hornbills are among the most iconic birds of Karnataka’s forests.

Strongly tied to old, mature trees, these fruit-eaters are vital seed dispersers, helping forests regenerate and thrive. Their presence, especially the Great Hornbill, often signals a healthy, well-protected habitat, especially in the Western Ghats.

Which hornbill have you been lucky enough to see in the wild?

When engineers struggled with loud tunnel booms from high-speed trains, they turned to an unlikely teacher — a bird.

The kingfisher’s beak lets it dive from air into water with barely a splash. By copying this shape, engineers made trains quieter, more energy-efficient, and even faster.

This is biomimicry — learning from nature’s 3.8 billion years of R&D.

Next time you spot a kingfisher, remember: you’re looking at a world-class engineer. 🫡
