J&K police issues avalanche advisory in Ganderbal

Ganderbal January 28:

An Avalanche occurred last night at around 10:15 pm near New Truck Yard, Sonamarg. Fortunately, the impact was minimal and no loss of life or property has been reported.

Police team along with SDRF timely reported in said area to assess the situation, official said in a press statement.

Concerned agencies are closely monitoring the situation, and precautionary measures are being kept in place to ensure public safety in the region.

In view of the prevailing conditions, Ganderbal Police adhere to the general public, tourists, and transporters to strictly avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas.

The chances of avalanches remain very high, and unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones can pose serious risks.

People are advised to follow official advisories, cooperate with local authorities, and prioritize safety while traveling through the Sonamarg axis and adjoining areas.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir issued a high-danger avalanche warning on Friday for six districts of the Union territory following fresh snowfall, officials said.

Avalanches with a high-danger level are likely to occur above 2,300 metres in Ganderbal district, in Central Kashmir, over the next 24 hours, the officials said.

They also warned that an avalanche with high danger level is likely to occur above 2,500 metres over districts, including Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban in the Jammu region, and Kupwara in North Kashmir.

The officials urged the residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas.

Earlier in the day, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall, the officials said.
