About Snow Leopards
Known throughout the world for its beautiful fur and elusive behaviour, the endangered snow leopard (Panthera Uncia) is found in the rugged mountains of Central Asia. Snow leopards are perfectly adapted to the cold, barren landscape of their high-altitude home.
Snow Leopard Biology
Solo traveller: the snow leopard is usually solitary and highly elusive
Crepuscular: dawn and dusk are the cat’s most active times
Living large: some snow leopards have home ranges of up to 1,000 square kilometers
Single moms: for about 18 months, females raise their cubs – all alone
Cold and dry: the snow leopard primarily lives in arid, barren mountain areas
Gentle: snow leopards are not known to be aggressive toward humans
Carnivorous: the cat’s main prey are ibex, argali and blue sheep
Physical Features
Height: 55-65 cm (22 – 26 inches)
Length: 90 – 115 cm (36 – 44 inches)
Tail: ca. 100 cm (40 inches)
About Snow Leopard Sighting in Spiti Valley
Extract from TOI dated 5th March 2019:
‘ The elusive and rarely sighted snow leopard is now frequently being spotted in snow-bound Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. What will delight wildlife lovers even more is the tendency of the endangered species to be to be seen in pairs. It has found a safe haven in Spiti where residents are protecting it and have learned to live with it. The success rate of snow leopard sightings in Spiti is over 50 % which is the highest in the world. Elsewhere, wildlife lovers spend decades searching for this elusive animal.’
