Q1
What is the best time to visit Kashmir?
Kashmir is stunning in every season — but each season offers a completely different experience. The best time depends on what you're looking for.
Spring
March – May
Tulip gardens in full bloom. Pleasant weather (10–20°C). Most popular season.
Summer
June – August
Cool and comfortable (15–25°C). Perfect escape from Indian heat. Ideal for Sonamarg.
Autumn
September – November
Golden chinar trees, harvest season. Fewer crowds, lower prices. Underrated gem.
Winter
December – February
Snow-covered valleys. Skiing at Gulmarg. Very cold (-5 to 5°C). Magical for adventurers.
Our recommendation
For first-time visitors, April–June gives you the best weather, all roads open, and Kashmir at its most colourful. Book at least 6–8 weeks in advance during this peak season.
Q2
Is Kashmir safe for tourists?
Yes — Kashmir is safe for tourists and welcomes millions of visitors every year. The tourism industry is thriving and locals are exceptionally warm and hospitable.
Tourist zones like Srinagar's Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg have a strong local and government security presence. Hotels, houseboats, and popular attractions are all visitor-friendly.
Tips for a safe visit
Book through a registered travel agency, keep your hotel informed of your daily itinerary, carry your ID, and check the state tourism website for any advisories before travel.
Q3
What are the must-visit places in Kashmir?
1
Dal Lake, Srinagar
Iconic shikara rides, floating gardens, and heritage houseboats. The heart of Kashmir.
2
Gulmarg
Asia's highest gondola ride, skiing in winter, meadows in summer. A must for every visitor.
3
Pahalgam
The Valley of Shepherds — river rafting, trekking, and the base for Amarnath Yatra.
4
Sonamarg
Meadow of Gold — glaciers, zero-point trek, and some of Kashmir's most dramatic scenery.
5
Mughal Gardens
Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi — terraced Persian gardens by Dal Lake.
Q4
How many days do I need for Kashmir?
We recommend a minimum of 5–6 nights for a comfortable first visit. Here's what you can cover:
5–6 nights Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam — ideal for most visitors
7–8 nights Add Sonamarg and more Srinagar exploration
10+ nights Add Ladakh or trekking routes for the adventurous
Don't rush Dal Lake
Spend at least 2 nights on a houseboat. Watching the sunrise on the lake is one of the most unforgettable experiences Kashmir offers.
Q5
What should I pack for Kashmir?
Packing depends heavily on when you visit, but here are the essentials for any season:
Warm layers Even in summer, evenings are cold. Carry a fleece or light jacket.
Comfortable walking shoes You'll be walking on uneven terrain and cobblestones.
Sunscreen & sunglasses UV is strong at altitude, especially at Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
Snow gear If visiting December–February, pack heavy thermals, snow boots, and gloves.
Camera Kashmir is impossibly photogenic — don't rely on just your phone.
Q6
How do I get to Kashmir?
Kashmir is well-connected by air, road, and rail to the rest of India.
✈
By Air (recommended)
Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and more. Flight time from Delhi is ~1.5 hours.
🚌
By Road
The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH44) is scenic but takes 8–10 hours from Jammu. Subject to weather closures in winter.
🚂
By Train
The Kashmir Railway is being extended. Currently, the nearest major railhead is Katra, from where you take a train to Srinagar.
