Goodbyes are always difficult.
I, Chinmai Verma, arrived in Srinagar about a year ago, disillusioned by the demands of corporate and city life. As I settled in slowly, I also got the wonderful opportunity to work with a not-for-profit organization; we started Downtown Legacy Tours as an initiative to bridge the gap between the tourists and travelers and local community members. Gradually over time, I met many wonderful individuals, our work reached places; Srinagar settled down inside of me. Today, I am gushing with emotions as I convey that I conducted the last tour as Project Director yesterday. It has been a tremendously profound experience for me! Connecting with local communities and serving guests from all over the world, helped me become a more compassionate and empathetic person. Until next time :)

With more and more women joining us on our downtown tour, we are glad to have created a safe space for individual expression and enjoyment that welcomes rather than impedes. From the very beginning, one of our primary areas of focus was to try and make tourism (in general) and downtown (in specific) more accessible to women, be it in groups or individually. This is one of our first steps towards the world that we envision. A world where access to knowledge and opportunities for cultural immersion doesn't remain bound by constraints of identity or gender.

Witness the lingering legacy of the past! Perched atop the Koh-i-Maran hill also known as Predemna Peet, overlooking Srinagar is the Hari Parbat fort. Its first fortifications and outer wall, built by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1590 as part of a new capital, never saw completion and the fort as it stands today was constructed in the 19th century under the reign of Shuja Shah Durrani. The fort houses four huge towers, two ponds and lawns. With a stunning view of Dal Lake, this fort sits at the top of a hill surrounded by structures from all religions.
