The Kargil War Memorial, also known as the Dras War Memorial, is a war memorial built by the Indian Army to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil War between India and Pakistan in 1999.

📍 Location

Dras, in the Kargil district of Ladakh, India.

Located along National Highway 1D (NH1D), about 5 km from Dras town, and one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.

🏛️ About the Memorial

Built in 2000 by the Indian Army.

Situated at the base of the Tololing Hill, which was a key battleground during the conflict.

The memorial includes:

A large pink sandstone wall with the names of all Indian soldiers who died in the war.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti, a flame of eternal honor for the fallen.

War artifacts like captured enemy weapons and bunkers.

A gallery named "Operation Vijay Gallery" that narrates the story of the war through photographs, documents, and war gear.

🪖 Significance of the Kargil War

Date: May to July 1999.

Operation: Named Operation Vijay.

Pakistani soldiers and militants had infiltrated Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector.

The Indian Army recaptured key peaks and territories with great bravery and loss.

Over 500 Indian soldiers were martyred.
