In a major crackdown against narcotics and drug-related activities, the Anti-Drugs Squad (ADS) and Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of District Police Tawang achieved a significant breakthrough on 22/05/2026 by carrying out a series of coordinated raids across multiple locations within the Tawang Township area. The operation was launched based on credible and reliable intelligence inputs regarding the illegal possession and circulation of suspected narcotic substances in the district.
The operation was led by Shri Tasso Kato, DySP, Tawang, under the close supervision and guidance of Shri Tasi Darang, Superintendent of Police, Tawang. The dedicated police team involved in the operation comprised L/Insp. Niyi Angu, SI Lham Thinley, SI Kesang Phuntso, SI Jambey Chorten, Ct. Jambey Tsering, Ct. Geshi Monpa, Ct. Lham Norbu, and Ct. (Dvr.) Tashi Phuntsok, all of whom played a crucial role in the successful ex*****on of the raids.
During the operation, the police team apprehended two individuals identified as Mr. Tenzin Phuntso (27 years), a resident of Mandrelling, and Mr. Lobsang (27 years), a resident of Nehru Market. Upon thorough search and verification, the team recovered and seized a total of 68 vials containing suspected he**in weighing approximately 81.6 grams (including the weight of the vials). The seized contraband is estimated to have a market value of approximately ₹3.4 lakh.
In accordance with legal procedures, the seizure process was conducted in the presence of Executive Magistrates A.C. Tenzin Jambey and A.C. Sangey Norbu, ensuring transparency and adherence to due process. Subsequently, a case has been registered at Police Station Tawang under the relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is currently underway to ascertain possible links, sources, and networks associated with the narcotics trade in the district.
This operation stands as the largest drug seizure ever recorded in Tawang district, marking a major achievement for District Police Tawang in its ongoing fight against illegal narcotics. At the same time, the incident reflects a deeply concerning trend regarding the increasing presence and movement of narcotic substances in the region, which poses a serious threat to the safety, health, and future of society, particularly the youth.
District Police Tawang has reiterated its firm and uncompromising “Zero Tolerance” policy against narcotic drugs and all related illegal activities. The police administration remains fully committed to identifying, tracking, and taking strict legal action against individuals or groups involved in the possession, transportation, distribution, or sale of narcotic substances. The district police has also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing credible information and supporting collective efforts to build a drug-free and safer society.
