Remembering the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche (1967-2014)

This page is meant to commemorate the tremendously beneficial activities of His Eminence the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche. Though Rinpoche is no longer physically with us may this page serve to commemorate his great deeds. May it help inspire each of those who were touched by his compassion, courage and wisdom to maintain his vision for all bei

ngs and especially for the people of Monyul (the land of the Monpa people). Jetsun Tenzin Jamphel Wangchuk, the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, was born in the land of Monyul ("the land of the Mon people") in Arunachal Pradesh, India. He was recognized at an early age by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the 13th incarnation of the great scholar and adept Tsonawa Sherab Sangpo. He then began his traditional monastic education at Drepung Loseling Monastery, near Mungod, India. Upon completing his studies he received the degree of Geshe Lharampa (Doctorate of Advanced Buddhist Philosophy). After he obtained his degree, he became the president of the Buddhist Culture Association of Himalaya. As president, he worked to develop strong relationships between the various cultures and religions of India. In addition, he devoted his life and activities to developing the religion and the culture of the land of Mon. He established numerous monasteries, centers of education, stupas and cottage industries on Monyul. He served as Minister of State, Industry, Textile and Handicrafts and as the Cabinet Minister of Tourism. He was also the Chairman of Advisory Council for Tourism Development (ACTD), and held the position of Chairman of the Hydropower Development Corporation, (APHPDC). He received several national and international awards for his tireless efforts in social work. He had the privilege of attending the millennium UN World Peace Summit at the United Nations Assembly Hall as the first ever Buddhist representative from the entire Himalayn region. He founded the Sherab Sangpo Society which was dedicated to the teachings the Buddhadharma to the people of India and especially those people of the Indian Himalayas. Understanding the interdependent relationship between the fragile physical and cultural environment of his Himalayan region, he was a staunch defender of protecting Monyul from unskillful rapid development that would compromise the future of his homeland. The 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche effortlessly combined his activities as a spiritual master and social worker in his dedication to benefitting all sentient beings, the people of India and especially the people of his home region of Monyul. Tragically, Tsona Gontse Rinpoche passed away suddenly on May 16th, 2014. The loss of this great master, teacher and activist goes beyond words and has left many people deeply saddened. May Rinpoche return to us quickly and may we develop the wisdom and courage to carry on his work for Monyul.

Having awoken to the very sad and tragic news of killings and several injures at rallies in Tawang earlier today, I want to express sincere condolences for those affected by this great tragedy.

As the people in the region and those with a connection to Monyul shed tears of sadness, may they be comforted by the light of Tsona Rinpoche's love and compassion.

As the search for the truth of what happened begins, may all involved be guided and inspired by the spirit of wisdom exemplified by H.E. Tsona Gontse Rinpoche.

The recent floods in Monyul have only underlined the highly fragile and sensitive environment in the region. It took only a few days of heavy rain to create serious landslides that killed nearly 20 people, destroyed homes and property, flooded holy places and created much fear and worry for the people of the region.

In these troubled times for the earth's environment, let us remember H.E. Tsona Rinpoche's words of advice to beware of reckless material development that will cause long-term harm for the people, the flora and fauna of the holy and beautiful land of Monyul. Let us continue his focused but peaceful work for the people, culture and land of Monyul.

Sending prayers for those who died in these floods and their loved ones. Sending prayers for the sustainable future of Monyul.

The following remembrance of H.E. Tsona Gontse Rinpoche was offered by Ani Namgey Lhamu from Bomdila. We rejoice in her story!
"I remember the time I spent at Rinpoche-la's bungalow in Itanagar. He was the minister of tourism then. Even though he was a minister, in the morning he would still check our toilets and bathrooms to make sure they were kept clean. He would also check to make sure someone did not leave the tap open. In the evenings, Rinpoche would then check our rooms to make sure there were no extra lights on and to make certain they were clean. During dinner he came to see what we were eating. He was so simple and humble. These signs and qualities belong to great masters like him, Monyul Kyabgon, the Omniscient Tsonawa, the highly acclaimed Master Of Vinaya."

Help Buddhism Survive and Thrive: Tsona Rinpoche

The following statement by H.E. the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche was posted on iSikkim.com on June 22, 2011. As the title states, Rinpoche spoke eloquently on the urgent need to preserve Buddhism in the Himalayan regions and thereby help Buddhism endure in the world. The need to preserve genuine Buddhist in the Himalayan regions is of even more importance today. We urge all people to do their part to help fulfill Rinpoche’s vision for Buddhism in the Himalayan region – The “Remembering the 13th Tsona Gonste Rinpoche” Facebook team.

“Whenever I go to Japan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and even in the western countries, people greet with love, affection and respect saying I come from India, the land which gave birth to Buddha and Buddhism.”

These were the defining words of Honourable Tsona Gontse Rinpoche in a meeting held at the Hauz Khas, (the) New Delhi-based camp of the Sherab Sangpo Society. On Monday, the respected Rinpoche met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to drive through his point that Buddhism and Buddhists need to be supported today more than ever. Rinpoche is also the Chairman of the Department of Karmik and Adhyatmik (Chos-Rig) Affairs, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh.

In the meeting with the PM the Rinpoche raised three major issues:

1. The number of Buddhists is on a continuous decline in the Himalayan belt. He underlined that Buddhists have maintained peace and harmony in the great mountains for thousands of years. Today, there are Buddhists in small pockets in Leh and Ladakh, Himachal (Pradesh), Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. These Buddhists have always stood for India and her glorious tradition. Today they are facing threats from a host of factors.

2. Rinpoche said that the culture and language of Buddhists in the Himalayan Region is under threat due to the invasion of various national and global forces. He requested the government to help promote Buddhist (institutions) in this belt and establish an institute of Buddhist learning. He said that such an institute (would) benefit Buddhists from Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Arunachal.

3. The Bhoti (Tibetan) Language is the language of (Himalayan) Buddhists. It’s from Bhot that Bhutias have got their ethnic name. Putting Bhoti language in the 8th schedule will save this language from being wiped out.

Rinpoche also urged the government to celebrate 2600 years of Buddha’s enlightenment as a national festival. He said that this will earn India the goodwill of not only Himalayan Buddhists but also the Buddhists spread across the world, many of them being in countries where India has very high stakes.

Apart from Rinpoche five others were also present during the meeting with the PM. They are Thopchen Rinpoche, Lama Chhospel Zodpa, Varun Tamang (Religious Secretary, Dilli Tamang Buddhist Ghedunla) and Lobsang Lama (Cultural Secretary, Dilli Tamang Buddhist Ghedunla).

The delegation submitted a memorandum to the PM and the PM assured them of action on all issues.

Earlier on Saturday, during the meeting at the Delhi camp, Rinpche expressed concern about the decline of Buddhism in India. He said that millions of people have become Buddhists in the western countries, but India continues to be a typical case. There have been cases of people coming into the Buddhist fold but that has happened mainly to avoid caste system. There is a need to revive the great tradition of love and harmony and give Buddhists a greater sense of bonding, the Rinpoche said.
