HEMIS GOMPA

Also known as Chang-Chub-Sam-Ling ( or the lone place of the compassionate person), Hemis Gompa, 45 km of south of Leh, belongs to the Brokpa order and was founded in the early 17th Century. Now it is one of the most accessible, famous and therefore most visited gompas. The gompa has an excellent library, well preserved frescoes showing some Kashmiri influence and good Buddha figures. The largest thangka ( Tibetan religious cloth paintings) in Ladakh, over 12m long, is at Hemis, but is only exhibited every 12 years. It’s next on display in 2028. To commemorate the birth of the renowned Indian sage, Padmasambhava, the famous annual Hemis Festival is held on the ninth to 11th days of the fifth Tibetan month, usually June/July.

LEH

Leh is located in a side valley just to the north of the Indus Valley until 1947 it had close trading relations with Central Asia, yak trains would set off from the leh bazaar to complete the stages over Karakoram Pass to Yarkland and Kashgr. Today Leh is an important strategic centre for India. Leh’s character changed when Ladakh was opened up to foreign tourists in 1974. Since then well over 100 hotels have been established and many of the shops in the main bazaar have been converted to sell arts and crafts. Leh is dominated by the dilapidated nine storey Leh Palace, home of the ladakhi royal family before they were exiled to Stock in the 1830s. Above the palace at the top of Namgyal Hill is the Victory Fort, built to commemorate Ladakh’s victory over the Balti Kashmir armies in the early 16th Centrury. The old town of Leh situated at the base of Namgyal Hill is a labyrinth of alleyways and houses stacked with dry wood and dung, which is collected to use as fuel to withstand the long winter months. In Cangspa, an outlying village of Leh, there are important Buddhist carvings dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries when Ladakh was convered to Buddhism.

LADAKH

Ladakh – the land of high passes – marks the boundary between the peaks of the western Himalaya and the vast Tibetian Plateau . Opened up to tourism in 1974, Ladakh has been variously described as “the moonland” , “Little Tibet” and even “the last Shangri La”. Whatever the description, its one of the most remote regions of India. The high culture of Ladakh is Buddhist, having close cultural and trading connections with Tibet. This is particularly evident in the most populated region of Leh and the Indus Valley, with its many whitewashed GOMPAS (Monasteries) and forts perched on top of sugarloaf mountains. Padum, the capital of the more remotes Zanskar, shares this Buddhist heritage. Kargil and the Suru Valley, the third main region of Ladakh, is predominantly Shiash Muslim and shares a cultural affinity with Baltistan. Ladakh’s earliest inhabitants were the Khampas, nomads who grazed their yaks on the high, windswept pastures. The first settlements along the upper Indus, were established by Mons, Buddhist pilgrims on their way from India to Mount Kailash in Tibet.

KINNAUR

Kinnaur is a remote mountainous district between Shimla and Tibetan border. The region was derestricted in 1991 and travel to and around Kinnaur is now possible with easy to obtain permits. Kinnaur is bound to the north by the formidable Zanskar Range, which forms the border with Tibet. The region is drained by the Sutlej River, which flows from close to Mr. Kailash in Tibet. To the South, the Himalaya forms the backdrop of the region with Kinnaur Kailash one of its most spectacular peaks. South of Kinnaur Kailash is the popular Sangla Valley, which has been described as one of the most scenic in the Entire Himalay. Because of regular references in Ancient Hindu texts as celestial musicians, Kinnauris have always regarded themselves as a distinct people of the A***n Group. Most Kinnauris follow a mixture of Hinduism, which they gained from the area’s ancient links with the rest of India and Tibetian Buddhism. Kinnaur also has a rich spread of local gods, which live side by side with Hindu and Buddhist deities.

Lahaul and Spiti, the largest district in Himachal Pradesh, is a vast area of high mountains and narrow valleys bounded by Ladakh to the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the south east and the Kully Valley to the South. Lahaul is often regarded as a midway point en route to Leh and the Indus Valley, but has more to offer travelers. Most people in Spiti are Buddhists and colourful gompas dominate the villages and village life. In Lahaul about half of the population is Buddhist while the other half is hindu. The main indigenous language of the area is Bhoti, which is very similar to Tibetan. Both Lahaul and Spiti are cut off from the Kullu Valley by heavy snow for up to eight months o the year. The Rohtang La to Lahaul Is normally closed between mid november to mid june and Kunzum La to Spiti is normally closed from mid October to mid July. CHAMBA VALLEY

Seperated from the Kangra valley to the south by the high Dhaula Dhar Range and the remote pattan valley to the north by the Pir Panjal Range is the beautiful Chamba Valley, through which flows the Ravi River. For over 1000 years this region formed the princely state of Chamba, the most ancient state in northern India. Few travelers find their way here and of those that do, even fewer continue down the valley beyond the hill station of Dalhousie. The valley is renowned for its fine Shikhara temples, with excellent examples in the beautiful town of Chamba, 56 km from Dalhousie and at the ancient capital of Brahmaur, 65 km farther down the valley to the sought east. Brahmaur is also the starting point for some fine treks, including that to the sacred lake of Manimahesh, 28 km away.

SHIMLA

Shimla was once part of the Nepalese kingdom and called Shyamala, another name for the goddess Kali but Shimla never gained any fame until it was discovered by the British in 1819. Three years later, the first British house was erected and in 1864 Shimla became the summer capital of India. After the construction of Kalka – Shimla Railway line in 1903, Shimla really blossomed. Shimla was initially the capital of the Punjab then become the capital of Himachal Pradesh in 1966. Today, Shimla is a pleasant, sprawling town set among cool pine clad hills with plenty of crumbling colonial charm.
There are only two roads in the central part of Shimla. The higher Mall runs east-west reaching its highest point at Scandal Point, the defacto centre of town. The mall area known as The Ridge runs from Scandal Point up to Christ Church.
