Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

The southern most tip of the Indian subcontinent, Kanyakumari forms an essential part of almost every trip to South India. Surrounded by water on all three sides, the weather here is usually cool and pleasant, the usual seaside climate. It is the first place in the country to receive the monsoon showers. If you’re a fan of rain, then experiencing the monsoon at this place in August in India should be a part of your to-do list. Also, being a lean season, one might avail some good discounts on hotels and restaurants at this time.

Shillong, Meghalaya

Better known as the 'Scotland of East', the best time to visit Shillong is during the monsoon. Shillong's natural beauty is multiplied by the rains as the lakes and waterfalls brim with water and make rhythmical music which soothes the soul and the eyes with it's ethereal beauty.

The attractive waterfalls like the Elephant falls, Wards lake etc have been one of the best tourist places for visiting in monsoon in the entire region. One could visit the Sweet falls which are touted as the most beautiful waterfall in Shillong. Apart from these the Crinoline Falls, Bishop and Beadon falls, Spread Eagle falls are also part of major tourist attractions.

Shillong receives heavy rainfalls during monsoon and the rainy season last longer here than in any other part of India. Even the local cuisine of Shillong caters to the weather and hot and steamy Jadoh, Dohneiiong, Tungtab will whet your appetite and keep the cold at bay. Kyat, the local brew made from rice is also a must for any foodie traveller.

Mawsynram and Cherrapunji is within travelling distance from Shillong. You could also make it a point to visit the megaliths in the surrounding Khasi Hills. You could even include a visit to the 'living bridges' or large bridges made out of roots of trees in Cherrapunji !

Ratnagiri, (Konkan) Maharashtra

The Ratnagiri district is bound by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Sindhudurg range of mountains to the south. There are a multitude of forts like Ratnadurga Fort, Suvarnadurg, Prachigad, Jaigad, Bhairavgad, Purnagad and Vasota are easier to trace in monsoon than in the hot and humid summers. The Bhagwati Mandir inside the Ratnadurga fort is ancient and is flocked by tourists and locals alike.

Many a resorts have propped up in the vicinity of the multitude of rivers in this region, especially around the Ratnagiri river and the Chiplun river. The beaches in this city like the Ratnagiri beach and Ganapatipule beach are one of the cleanest and unspoilt beaches and are ideal for a quiet walk in the morning or evening.

The Thibaw Palace built for the exiled Burmese royalty in 1910-11 is another major tourist attraction. For those with a spiritual bent of mind, Ratnagiri is full of ancient temples like the Parshuram temple and the Velneshwar temple.

When in Ratnagiri, you could also take a day trip to Pawas which has become an important pilgrimage centre because of the Shri Swami Swarupanand Samadhi mandir, constructed after this very famous saint. Ratnagiri is also world renowned for its Hapus or Alphanso mangoes produced in and around the city. So make sure you partake some of the amazing delicacies of this region when in Ratnagiri !
