VARKALA NAMED NEXT GOA BY UK’s THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian, the newspaper known to influence the wanderlust of the English, has called Varkala the next Goa. Varkala and the ayurveda options the beach destination provides, is eighth in the list of The Guardian’s `30 of the best bargain adventures in 2013′. Varkala is listed along with adventure spots like Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Canary Island, Spain, Australia, Bali and US.

It’s the first time in a decade that The Guardian is endorsing a Kerala destination. The paper had included Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram city in its must-go list put out in 2001.

The daily’s endorsement is seen as a major boost to Kerala tourism as English tourists form the biggest chunk of international tourists to state. In 2011, they constituted 26.5 per cent of the foreign arrivals to Kerala. US travellers were a distant second at 13 per cent.

Varkala’s emergence, though a positive development for Kerala tourism, is also seen as the beginning of the end of Kovalam.“Usually, Kovalam is seen as the gateway to Kerala.
Now-a-days, foreign individual travellers and even domestic tourists insist that they be driven straight to Varkala once they land in Thiruvananthapuram“, said Joby Joseph of Kerala Holidays.

The list, however, is overwhelmingly supportive of Sri Lanka, Kerala’s closest competitor. Sri Lanka features in more lists put out by The Guardian for 2013.

History Of Varkala

The history of Varkala or the Benaras of South is very interesting. A popular Vaishanvaiteshrine is said to be 3500-years-old. There is a mythological story behind its origin. It is said, Narada -the saint according to Hindu Mythology was approached by a group of pilgrims to confess the sins they had committed.

Narada in order to help the pilgrims threw his Valkalam (cloth made out of the bark of a tree) . The Varkalam fell near the seashore and Narada gave instructions to his devotees to offer prayers. In due course of time, the place was called Papanasam' which means ' to get rid of sins'. Gradually, the mythological place came to be known as Varkala’.

During the colonial rule, the ancient place got a face-lift. The British built the famous 924-foot-long tunnel in the 19th century which took about 14 years to get completed. The main purpose of constructing the tunnel was to ferry people and goods from Kollam to Trivandrum during the colonial reign.

Temples in VarkalaThe history of remains incomplete without mentioning the role of Sree Narayana Guru, a multi-talented personality who scripted some important chapters in the evolution of the ancient city. Sree Narayan Guru was a social reformer, saint, philosopher and leader of Ezhava community famous for propagating the concept of 'one caste, one religion'. The Sivagiri Mutt set up in 1928 was his contribution.

Varkala

Varkala, a calm and quiet hamlet, lies on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. It has several places of tourist interests like a beautiful beach, a 2000-year-old Vishnu Temple and the Ashramam - Sivagiri Mutt a little distance from the beach.

At the serene Varkala beach is a quiet sea resort rich in mineral water springs. A dip in the holy waters at this beach is believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins; hence the name 'Papanasam beach'.

A two thousand year old shrine the Janardhanaswamy Temple stands on the cliffs overlooking the beach, a short distance away. The Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the great Hindu reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru (1856 - 1928) is also close by. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30th December to 1st January. Sree Narayana Guru propagated the ideology: "one caste, one religion and one god", in a society torn by the taboos of caste system.

History of Varkala.

It is believed that a Pandyan King was instructed by Lord Brahma to build a temple at this very place to redeem him of his sins. But several other myths abound on the birth of Varkala. Another legend goes like this - when a group of pilgrims approached Saint Narada and told him that they had sinned, Narada threw his valkalam ( a loin cloth made from the bark of a tree) and it landed at this scenic village and hence, the place came to be known as Varkala. Narada told the pilgrims to pray for their redemption at Papanasam, which literally means redemption from sins.
