പടിഞ്ഞാറ് അറബിക്കടലും കിഴക്ക് സമുദ്രനിരപ്പില്‍ നിന്ന് 500 മുതല്‍ 2700 വരെ മീറ്റര്‍ ഉയരമുള്ള പശ്ചിമഘട്ടവും തലങ്ങും വിലങ്ങുമായി നാല്‍പത്തിനാല് നദികളുമുള്ള കേരളത്തിന് വൈവിധ്യമാര്‍ന്ന ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയാണുള്ളത്. ഉന്നത ഗിരിനിരകളും അഗാധ താഴ്‌വാരങ്ങളും മുതല്‍ അനവധി കായലുകളും വിശാലമായ സാഗര തീരവും വരെ എല്ലാം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്.

ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്വന്തം നാട് (God's Own Country) എന്ന പരസ്യവാക്യം കേരളത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് അതിശയോക്തിയല്ല. ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ കാലാവസ്ഥയും സമൃദ്ധമായ മഴക്കാലങ്ങളും സുന്ദരമായ ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയും ജലസമ്പത്തും വനങ്ങളും നീണ്ട കടല്‍ത്തീരവും നാല്പതിലധികം നദികളും കേരളത്തെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്തര അക്ഷാംശം 8 ഡിഗ്രി 17' 30" നും 12 ഡിഗ്രി 47' 40" നും ഇടയ്ക്കും പൂര്‍വ്വരേഖാംശം 74 ഡിഗ്രി 7' 47" നും 77 ഡിഗ്രി 37' 12" നും ഇടയ്ക്കുമാണ് ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായി കേരളത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. സഹ്യാദ്രിക്കും അറബിക്കടലിനുമിടയില്‍ ഹരിതാഭമായ ഒരു അരഞ്ഞാണം പോലെ കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഉത്പത്തിയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള പ്രഖ്യാതമായ പുരാവൃത്തമാണ് പരശുരാമ കഥ. മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ ദശാവതാരങ്ങളിലൊരാളായ പരശുരാമന്‍ മഴു എറിഞ്ഞ് കടലില്‍ നിന്ന് ഉയര്‍ത്തിയെടുത്ത പ്രദേശമാണ് കേരളമെന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.

ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയനുസരിച്ച് കേരളത്തെ പലതായി വിഭജിക്കാറുണ്ട്. മലനാട്, ഇടനാട്, തീരപ്രദേശം എന്ന സാമാന്യ വിഭജനത്തിനാണു കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രചാരം. കുറേക്കൂടി സൂക്ഷ്മമായി കിഴക്കന്‍ മലനാട് (Eastern Highland), അടിവാരം (Foot Hill Zone), ഉയര്‍ന്ന കുന്നിന്‍ പ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ (Hilly Uplands), പാലക്കാട് ചുരം, തൃശ്ശൂര്‍ - കാഞ്ഞങ്ങാട് സമതലം, എറണാകുളം - തിരുവനന്തപുരം റോളിങ്ങ് സമതലം, പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ തീരസമതലം എന്നീ പ്രകൃതി മേഖലകളായും വിഭജിക്കാറുണ്ട്. സഹ്യാദ്രിയോടു ചേര്‍ന്ന് തെക്കു വടക്കായി നീണ്ടു കിടക്കുന്നതാണ് മലനാട് അഥവാ കിഴക്കന്‍ മലനാട്. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ കാടുകളാണ് ഈ മേഖലയില്‍ ഏറിയപങ്കും. ഉഷ്ണ മേഖലാ നിത്യഹരിത വനങ്ങളും ചോലവനങ്ങളും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന നദികളെല്ലാം ഉദ്ഭവിക്കുന്നതും മലനാട്ടില്‍ നിന്നു തന്നെ. പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ മണ്ണാര്‍ക്കാടിനടുത്തുള്ള സൈലന്റ് വാലിയാണ് ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ നിത്യഹരിത വനം. സൈലന്റ് വാലിയും ഇരവികുളവും ദേശീയോദ്യാനങ്ങളാണ്. ആനമുടി (2695 മീ.)യാണ് കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന കൊടുമുടി. അഗസ്ത്യകൂടം (1869 മീ.) തെക്കേയറ്റത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന കൊടുമുടിയും. സഹ്യാദ്രിക്കു സമാന്തരമാണ് തെക്കു വടക്കു നീളത്തിലുള്ള പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ തീരസമതലം. മലനാടിനും തീരസമതലത്തിനും ഇടയ്ക്കാണ് ഇടനാട്. കുന്നുകളും സമതലങ്ങളും അടങ്ങിയ ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയാണിവിടെ.

പടിഞ്ഞാറ് അറബിക്കടലിലേക്കോ കായലുകളിലേക്കോ ഒഴുകുന്ന 41 നദികള്‍, കിഴക്കോട്ടൊഴുകുന്ന മൂന്നു നദികള്‍, കായലുകള്‍, തോടുകള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ കേരളത്തെ ജലസമ്പന്നമാക്കുന്നു.
