Varanasi, or Kashi, is not just a city but a complex spiritual grid where the entire cosmos is believed to be mapped onto its narrow lanes and ancient ghats. While the 12 Jyotirlingas and 51 Shakti Peeths are spread across the Indian subcontinent, Kashi is unique because it houses "miniature" versions of all of them within its own boundaries.
Here is a breakdown of the key spiritual sites shown in your map:
1. The 12 Jyotirlingas of Kashi
In Kashi, devotees often perform a "Yatra" to visit these 12 temples, which represent the 12 main Jyotirlingas of India. They are believed to provide the same merit as visiting the original far-off sites:
Kashi Vishwanath: The primary deity of the city and the original 9th Jyotirlinga.
Somnath: Located at Manmandir Ghat (representing the Somnath in Gujarat).
Mallikarjun: Found in the Sigra/Shivpura area (representing Srisailam, AP).
Mahakaleshwar: Located in the Daranagar mohalla (representing Ujjain, MP).
Omkareshwar: Situated near the Chittanpura/Pathani Tola area (representing Khandwa, MP).
Kedarneshwar: A prominent temple at Kedar Ghat (representing Kedarnath, Uttarakhand).
Bhimashankar: Located near the Kashi Vishwanath area at Bhimeshwar (representing Pune, Maharashtra).
Nageshwar: Found near Bhosale Ghat/Patani Tola (representing Dwarka, Gujarat).
Baijnath: Located in the Baijnatha area (representing Deoghar, Jharkhand).
Trayambakeshwar: Near the Bansphatak area (representing Nashik, Maharashtra).
Rameshwar: Found at Manmandir Ghat or the Rameshwaram area (representing Rameswaram, TN).
Grishneshwar: Located near the Kamachha area (representing Ellora, Maharashtra).
2. Major Shakti Peeths
Kashi is a rare site where both Shiva and Shakti reside in their highest forms. There are two primary Shakti Peeths here:
Vishalakshi Devi Temple: Located at Mir Ghat, very close to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. It is said to be the spot where Sati's earrings (or sometimes her eyes) fell. It is a powerful center for South Indian devotees and features distinct Dravidian architecture.
Manikarnika Shakti Peeth: Associated with the Manikarnika Ghat, where Sati's earrings (Manikarnika) are said to have fallen into the kund (sacred pond) there.
3. Other Significant Temples
Kaal Bhairav: Known as the "Police Chief of Kashi." It is said that no one can stay in the city without his permission.
Sankat Mochan Hanuman: Established by Tulsidas, this temple is a major hub for protection and strength.
Durga Kund Temple: An 18th-century temple built in the Nagara style, famous for its red color and large pond.
Birla Temple (New Vishwanath): Located inside BHU, this temple is a modern architectural marvel with one of the tallest spires in India.
