Did you know that this small clay object is considered one of the oldest maps in human history?
It is the Babylonian Map of the World (Imago Mundi) — a Babylonian clay tablet dating back to the 6th century BCE, written in cuneiform to illustrate how the Babylonians imagined the world.
The circular shape represents the world as it was perceived at the time, with the city of Babylon at the center, surrounded by rivers, cities, and known regions, while the outer circle symbolizes the ocean they believed encircled the earth.
The map also includes cuneiform inscriptions explaining places and related myths.
Today, the original tablet is preserved in the British Museum, standing as one of humanity’s earliest attempts to understand and map the world.
