Exploring Borgarvirki 🍂

Rising above the plains of Vatnsnes, Borgarvirki is a natural volcanic formation with a mysterious past.

Its steep rock walls form a natural fortress, but centuries ago, people added stone walls to strengthen its defences. According to local tradition, Borgarvirki was used as a stronghold during conflicts between local clans, although its exact history remains a mystery.

Located just a short detour from Iceland’s Ring Road, Borgarvirki is easy to visit. A short walk from the parking area takes you up to the fortress, where you can explore the ancient walls and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Autumn looks good on Ásbyrgi 🍂

Surrounded by towering cliffs, Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon with sheltered woodland and walking trails leading to some beautiful viewpoints. According to legend, the canyon was formed when Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse, placed one of his hooves on the ground.

In autumn, the trees turn shades of yellow, orange and red, making an already special place look even better.

If you’re driving through the Icelandic countryside in September, you might come across réttir. 🐑

After the sheep have spent the summer roaming freely in the mountains, farmers head into the highlands to gather them and guide the flock down to the local sheepfold. Since sheep from different farms have grazed together all summer, local farmers, families and neighbours come together to sort them before each flock returns to its own farm.

A centuries-old tradition and a true sign that autumn has arrived in Iceland. 🍂

This is your sign to go berry picking in North Iceland🫐

Late summer is prime berry-picking time, with wild blueberries and bilberries waiting to be picked across the countryside. Look for wild berries in heathland, hillsides and around birch woodland.

Local tip: mix your berries with skyr, a splash of cream and a little sugar. A simple Icelandic combo you have to try. 🤌
