Dearest Aska,
You came to us in May 2011 and truly became an influential force in our lives. We thought we were just getting a dog, but instead, we gained so much more — a better life. You were the perfect puppy, never destructive, always obedient and kind. You went with us everywhere, and from day one, you became part of the family.
You were the smartest of all our dogs, the best leader we ever had on the sled, the most fertile female, the best mother. Yes, you were the leader of the group — the matriarch. Everyone respected you, everyone behaved the way you wanted. It wasn’t hard to manage such a large pack with you as co-leader.
We learned sled dog racing with you, the whole family did — the kids even competed with you. Your first trophy was our first trophy in our very first adult race. Because of you, we met so many amazing people and ended up in all kinds of dog-related clubs and boards. We had so much fun with you at dog fields and walked thousands of kilometers together. You even pulled us up Súlur mountain.
You gave us 8 puppies, 4 of whom still live with us — along with 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. You came on camping trips and loved traveling — never got car sick, never any fuss.
When we started our company, it was never a question — you were the inspiration for our logo, and we proudly tell everyone that goHusky is you. You were always off-leash because you were the most obedient dog we ever knew. You looked after Eldur and Reykur and later the whole pack. You didn’t just follow — you led.
Even when you stopped working on the sled, you were amazing on hikes with tourists. We could always trust you — perfect with kids — it didn’t matter if they dropped the leash, you never strayed.
You and Dad started every morning walking around the barn — him with his coffee, you running around, sniffing and enjoying yourself. You were always healthy, but then old age crept in slowly. An eye operation, a tumor on your head, hearing loss, and something going on with your left hind leg. But you never complained — that wasn’t your way. And even as your body weakened, your nose was always in top shape.
When it was treat time, you never had to rush — you knew you’d get something, usually first. You even got bites from the dinner table — more often as you got older. That’s how queens should be treated. No one got anything until you had yours.
We’ve watched you grow weaker and more tired, especially after Reykur left us in August. That’s when your spark really started to fade. We’ve been worried about you. We didn’t want to lose you. For a long time, we’ve talked about letting you go while you still had some health, still had dignity, and still commanded that special respect — before you got too sick to stand, run, or play.
Then the “right day” came. We spent a beautiful day with you. You got everything you wanted — and more. Countless bites of beef tongue and other goodies. You went for a walk with your children, with Mom, Dad, and our girls. You trotted along, even ran a bit, and gracefully leaped across a stream — more like a two-year-old than a 14-year-old.
Then we had quiet time — hugged you, cuddled and kissed you — while you drifted off to sleep in your favorite spot, in front of the fridge in the kitchen. You chose us as your family when you were a tiny pup, falling asleep in Dad’s lap — and you left the world the same way, asleep in Dad’s arms.
Dad wrapped you in a blue blanket, matching your beautiful eyes, and carried you out to the hill where Svartur, your best cat friend, had been waiting for you. Now you rest together again, head to head.
There must’ve been quite a party in the Eternal Lands on Friday night when you, Queen Aska herself, arrived. Reykur, Eldur, Myrkur, your father and mother, your sisters, and your old sled friends — reunited once more.
Dearest Aska, even though our hearts are shattered, they are also filled with deep gratitude for everything you gave us and everything you taught us in those 14 wonderful years. There is deep sorrow, yes — but also peace. You lived a beautiful life and left in peace. The memories of you, our one-of-a-kind girl, will live forever.
We love you, and you truly loved your people — especially Dad. You were always his girl.
Run free, our beloved Aska ❤️
