Can you go whale watching in the fog?

We get asked this sometimes. Our answer is always the same: it is more difficult, but we know these waters.

Today we headed out into Eyjafjörður with visibility changing constantly—from around 10 metres at times to nearly 1,000 metres when the fog opened.

And we found the wildlife.

harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins and five humpback whales.

In this 13-second clip, two of our well-known humpbacks, Oddur and Stormur, appear through the fog together.

Days like this are a good reminder that whale watching is not only about seeing far. It is about knowing the area, understanding the wildlife, listening, watching and knowing where to look.

Even in the fog, Eyjafjörður can surprise us.

Sometimes, you just have to wait.

We were quietly waiting for Shadow, a humpback whale we’ve known since 2019, when suddenly the first sign appeared — bubbles rising from below the surface.

Shadow had started spouting before reaching the surface.

Then, just moments later, this beautiful, calm whale surfaced right next to our boat.

Only six seconds, but what a moment.

The autumn whales are arriving!

Two very familiar humpback whales together in this 22-second moment.

The first whale going down has been known to us since 2011, and the second since 2017. Two big humpback whales that we have followed for many years, and always amazing to welcome them back.

And the autumn whale season seems to be starting early this year.

We are already out on the fjord this morning, and just 30 minutes after leaving Dalvík harbour, we have seen at least four humpback whales and white-beaked dolphins.

September is off to a fantastic start in Eyjafjörður.

Old friends returning. More whales arriving. Autumn in North Iceland.

We love Capri.

Capri has now been with us for four weeks in a row — and this beautiful humpback also visited us in July and June. It seems Capri really likes it here in Eyjafjörður. And we certainly love having her around.

In this short video, the sea is almost perfectly flat. Capri surfaces, takes a breath, and then gracefully disappears beneath the water.

No drama needed. Just a humpback whale, a calm sea, and one of those peaceful moments we never get tired of.

Capri — always amazing to see.

55 seconds of peaceful humpback whale watching from Dalvík. Just watch, listen and enjoy.

We had turned off the engines and simply waited. No chasing, no rushing — just silence, the sound of the ocean, and the anticipation of where the whale would surface next.

And then he appeared, right beside us. ❤️

These are some of our favorite moments at sea.

When we are calm around them, they are calm around us.
We show them respect — and sometimes, in return, we get the very best show.

Autumn is definitely upon us in North Iceland.

Eight humpback whales were here today, calm and completely at ease around our boats

We love autumn in Eyjafjörður!

There’s something special about this time of year. As autumn arrives, the humpback whales often start gathering together — sometimes two or three, and on incredible days we’ve seen groups of up to eleven humpbacks surfacing and diving together.

With plenty of food around, we often see them working together, feeding and moving almost as one. Seeing several huge humpbacks rise to the surface side by side, hearing their powerful breaths, and then watching them disappear beneath the water together is something you never get tired of.

Yesterday, three humpback whales gave us another beautiful autumn moment, surfacing and diving together close to Máni, our Classic Whale Watching boat.

Autumn whale watching has begun.

September is here

And if history is anything to go by, we have an exciting month ahead.

Since we started whale watching from Dalvík in 2009, September has been the month where we have most often achieved 100% whale sighting success throughout the month.

There is something special about autumn in Eyjafjörður. September, October and November can bring some of our most memorable encounters with humpback whales.

This little six-second moment says it all — one powerful breath, a quiet disappearance beneath the surface, and we wait to see where the whale will appear next.

Welcome, September.

Beautiful encounter with Capri.

This morning we encountered four humpback whales close to Hjalteyri in Eyjafjörður — and Capri was in a particularly good mood.

She came towards the boat several times, curious and completely relaxed. Twice we were able to turn off the engines and simply enjoy the moment.

No engine noise. Just the sound of the whales breathing.

They were spending only a short time at the surface before diving again, but somehow they always seemed to have a little time to come over and check us out.

There is something very special about sitting silently on the water when a humpback whale chooses to approach the boat. We don’t need to follow. We don’t need to move. We can simply turn everything off and enjoy their presence.

That feeling never gets old.

POV: You went out for a normal day on the water… and the ocean decided to put on a show 🐋🌊

Some moments you simply can’t plan for.
Just you, the sea, and a whale appearing out of nowhere. 🤯

Would you have spotted it? 👀

Four humpback whales in our area yesterday!

Capri, Geronimo, Jasper and Shadow were all around, making for another beautiful day of whale watching from Dalvík.

In this video, Jasper and Shadow came up very close to us. Our engine was off, and after surfacing beside the boat, they calmly turned and went down together.

Turn up the sound.
No engine. No music. Just the powerful breath of two humpback whales before they disappear beneath the surface.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is simply stay still, listen and watch.
