Meet Neil solo rider who had an Epic! He was having a blast shredding in the trees following tracks in Hakuba 47. Our group was in the process of skiing down trough a glade when I saw a snowboarder across the drainage hit a large tree at speed and violently spin around. We immediately started yelling at him as we could hear the impact, and it was really worrying. It took 30mins to get up to him as we needed to break trail, when we found Neil he was facing uphill in a crouched position unable to move and in serious pain. He complained of sore lower back, pain in this thigh with tingling in his foot. This scared me a bit due to the force he hit the tree. Luckily we had 3 doctors in our group that cleared his spine and he only had soft tissue issues with a sore back and a hematoma to his quad. With no ability to go downhill and 850m of gnarly gullied decent, climbing up was the only way out for him. It took a considerable amount of time to limp Neil up the 150m bootpack. He was a legend, muscled his way despite the pain and after a sweaty hour and half we reached the ski hill where the ski patrollers wisked him away. He was incredibly lucky as it all could have been a lot worse with a real potential of staying out overnight or worse a broken back. Reflectively I can remember my first forays into the side/backcountry where I had similar close calls. How many of us got away with similar stuff ? That intial period of being naive is magical but at some point we have a near miss, wake up and start getting dialed into safe travel in the backcountry. Glad we could help Neil and that the outcome was what it was!

Passed these guys while driving the family back to Reykjavik a couple springs ago. The driving at the time was herendous and out of the clouds and snow appeared two bikers with skis fully loaded. Pretty epic!

I ended up bumping into them two more times as they worked there way through the Troll Pen*sula. Neat film that’s worth a watch.

Back in Iceland for some corn. A beautiful place to be after a long year off the skis and away from the mountains. Travel is opening up and the testing and vacine programs globally are improving things that with luck we can move a little more freely for 2022
