Not every memorable day requires a full-day adventure.

Today took us to the West Side of Stuðlagil Canyon, where the basalt formations reveal a different side of this famous canyon, and to Rjúkandi Waterfall, one of East Iceland’s most impressive roadside waterfalls.

Places we’ve visited countless times, yet they always manage to look a little different.

That’s one of the things we love most about East Iceland.

The weather forecast didn’t look promising.

Low clouds, mist and occasional rain.

But that’s the thing about East Iceland – some places don’t need sunshine to impress.

These photos were taken at Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður Eystri, home to one of Iceland’s most accessible puffin colonies. Every summer thousands of puffins nest here, often just a few metres away from visitors.

No drones.
No zoom lens required.
Just patience and a good jacket.
