Vöðlavík is a remote cove south of Gerpir where a small farming community once lived. One abandoned farm still stands, remarkably intact, while other traces remain scattered across the valley like quiet reminders of the past.

You can reach Vöðlavík by hiking or by driving a rough mountain road from Eskifjörður in summer. A simple cabin run by Ferðafélag Fjarðamanna offers shelter for those who want to slow down and connect with the raw nature of the Eastfjords.

Just above Reyðarfjörður, you’ll find this little hidden gem that only the locals know about. The Búðará river winds through a scenic canyon and a little higher up the hill you’ll find Búðarárfoss waterfall.

The trail starts near the Wartime Museum and follows the river through lush greenery and cliffs. It’s an easy-to-moderate walk, perfect for a short nature break. And if you’re feeling brave on a sunny day, you could even take a cold plunge. Peaceful, dramatic, and surprisingly photogenic — all just steps from town.

Step into Kjarval’s Austurland 🖼️

Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885–1972) is one of Iceland’s most beloved artists. He spent part of his youth in Borgarfjörður Eystri, where the dramatic landscapes and mystical atmosphere deeply influenced his work. Later in life, he often returned east — finding peace and inspiration at his little retreat by the river Selfljót, now known as Kjarvalshvammur.

This summer and up until October, you can get to know both the artist and his connection to Austurland through the exhibition “Kjarval á Austurlandi”, presented in two locations:

📍 On the ground floor of Sláturhúsið in Egilsstaðir, the focus is on Kjarval’s life and personal connection to Austurland. At the heart of the exhibition is Gullmávurinn, a small boat gifted to him on his 70th birthday, a symbol of his ties to the region and his love for nature, solitude, and creativity.

📍 At Skaftfell Art Center in Seyðisfjörður, you’ll find a curated selection of artworks created in and inspired by East Iceland. These works highlight Kjarval’s unique ability to blend realism and fantasy, drawing from the mountains, fjords, and folklore of the region.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the landscapes that shaped one of Iceland’s greatest artists — through his own eyes.

Once every year at the end of July, the quiet town of Borgarfjörður eystri comes alive with music and magic. This is Bræðslan: A festival like no other in Iceland, where the old fish factory pulses with sound and soul. 🎶✨

This year marks 20 years since Bræðslan first lit up the East. What began as a small, heartfelt gathering has become a beloved tradition where raw nature meets live music in one of the country’s most unforgettable settings.

Fáskrúðsfjörður is a little fjord with a unique story to tell. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was home to a thriving French fishing community who came to harvest Iceland’s rich waters. Their legacy still lingers, from bilingual street signs to the beautifully restored French hospital and the French fishermen’s cemetery overlooking the sea. Don’t miss this hidden gem on your Eastfjords adventure and be sure to visit the French Museum while you’re there.

🥾 Summer Hikes in Austurland #8: NESKAUPSTAÐUR NATURE RESERVE

The Neskaupstaður Nature Reserve is Iceland’s first official nature reserve, established in 1972. Just a short walk from town, this coastal trail leads you through a landscape of steep cliffs, small waterfalls, and ocean-carved caves like Páskahellir. The path offers wide views over Norðfjörður Bay and the wild coastline that makes this part of Austurland so special.

The area is rich in flora and wildlife, and there is always something to see if you slow down and look closely. This hike is suitable for most walkers and can be enjoyed year round, though caution is needed in winter conditions.

Please help protect the reserve by staying on marked paths and treating the land with care.
