What an epic end to one of our tours a few days ago! ✨

Sometimes, the cherry on top comes right at the end. We had already enjoyed encounters with white-beaked dolphins and s***m whales when, on our way back to the harbour, we spotted a spread-out pod of orcas. A few of them came in close, allowing our guests to observe them from a very short distance.

Each tour is different, and that’s one of the things we love most – we never quite know what nature has in store for us. 💙

A familiar visitor on many of our recent tours... but not always the easiest one to spot. 👀🐋

Fast, streamlined, and often travelling alone, this whale can be surprisingly elusive despite being one of the species we encounter regularly around Snæfellsnes. Despite being the second-smallest baleen whale in the world, it can still grow to over 9 metres in length.

Do you know which whale species we're looking at here? Let us know your guess in the comments! 👇

Today, June 8, we celebrate World Oceans Day — a reminder of the vital role our oceans play in supporting life on Earth. 🌊

At Láki Tours, we believe that education, respect for wildlife, and responsible and sustainable practices are essential to protecting these ecosystems and the incredible species that call them home. 💙

And we don’t blame you! 😉 Listening to a pod of wild orcas exhale is one of those awe-inspiring experiences that stay with you forever. 🥹

During this encounter in Breiðafjörður, calm seas and almost complete silence allowed us to fully appreciate the moment.

Thanks to our lovely guests from the US for sharing such positive feedback! 💙

They were lucky enough to encounter three cetacean species on one of our tours: s***m whales, orcas, and white-beaked dolphins. 🐋

Orcas have been keeping us company on many of our recent tours! We've been lucky to witness them feeding, socialising, travelling through the fjord, and even displaying some fascinating behaviours, including spy-hopping, fluke slapping, and a breach!

The waters around Snæfellsnes offer some of the best opportunities in Iceland to encounter orcas in the wild, especially between March and June. Join us from Ólafsvík 👉 lakitours.com

What you’re hearing are sounds produced by s***ms whales as they descended beneath the surface, recorded with our hydrophone. 🔊

S***m whales use these clicks for echolocation, helping them navigate and hunt in the dark depths of the ocean. They also communicate through patterns of clicks known as codas, which can vary between groups and play an important role in their social lives.

S***m whales hold some other impressive records: they are the largest toothed animals on Earth, with adult males reaching up to 18 metres in length and weighing more than 50 tonnes. They are also among the deepest-diving marine mammals, capable of diving well beyond 1,000 metres and remaining underwater for over an hour.

The s***m whales we encounter around Snæfellsnes are almost exclusively adult males, visiting these rich northern feeding grounds while females and calves remain in warmer waters.

What fact surprised you the most? Let us know in the comments 💬

The last week brought us memorable encounters with several s***m whales, pods of orcas, and white-beaked dolphins. 🐋

Despite a few days spent ashore due to the weather, May also treated us to some beautiful conditions on the water. And these photos are just a small glimpse of what we've been lucky enough to experience lately in Breiðafjörður. ☀️

Many of our tours this week are already fully booked, so don't wait too long to secure your spot! 👉 Book at lakitours.com
