Happy Icelandic Nature Day! 🇮🇸🫍

A day to appreciate the dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife that make Iceland so special — from glaciers, lava fields and waterfalls to the birds, and marine life that call this island home.

For us, conservation also means education. By observing wildlife, conducting research, and learning more about the marine life in our area, we can share our knowledge with our guests and help build a deeper understanding and appreciation of the species that live in these waters.

Every encounter with wildlife is on the animals’ terms, and we believe that enjoying nature comes with a responsibility to respect it. By following responsible whale-watching practices, respecting guidelines in nature, and making conscious choices in our everyday lives, we can all contribute to protecting Iceland’s natural environment and marine life. 💙

White-beaked dolphins are regular visitors to the waters of Breiðafjörður, and we never get tired of watching them travel, leap and play alongside the boat. 🐬

During their prime season, we are also lucky to encounter their larger relatives, the orcas, and very occasionally, pilot whales.

Today we celebrate these intelligent, highly social and curious animals — and to remember why protecting them matters so much.

Dolphins and other cetaceans can be affected by entanglement in fishing gear, pollution, underwater noise, habitat changes, lack of prey, and climate change, among others. In some parts of the world, they are also still hunted or kept in captivity for entertainment. 😔

For us, one of the most important parts of whale watching is simply seeing these animals where they belong — wild, free and on their own terms. 💙

We had been looking for whales for quite some time during our tour, but apparently, there was something pretty exciting waiting for us. 👀

We spotted a minke whale, and when it appeared again, we switched off the engine and waited. Then, when we least expected it, the whale surfaced right beside the boat!

Thanks to the sunny weather and clear water, we could see beneath the surface and observe its white patches and other details that are usually so difficult to see.

Minke whales can be tricky to see. They are fast, streamlined and often surface for only a few seconds before disappearing again, making every sighting feel a little like a guessing game.

But this curious individual decided to stick around and swim around the boat for several minutes before we finally said goodbye.

A very special encounter with one of the more elusive and least studied whale species! 💙

The summer months are truly an amazing opportunity to witness the majestic humpback whales here in Breiðafjörður. 🐋💙

And this was the case for our lovely guest from Austria, who was lucky enough to see a few of them — including one curious humpback that decided to check out our boat.

The whale was accompanied by some white-beaked dolphins, who seemed to be having a great time playing around it and even “bothering” the humpback a little! 🤭

We continue our early September days with calm seas and the great companions — humpback whales. 🐋💙

Humpbacks are famous for their impressive surface behaviour, from breaching and tail throws to pec slaps, lob-tailing and spy-hopping. 👀 They are also some of the most complex feeders among baleen whales, using their baleen to filter food from the water. Here in Iceland, their menu includes krill, herring, mackerel, sand eels and capelin. 🐟

They spend the summer months feeding in Icelandic waters before heading south to warmer breeding grounds for the winter. 🌞 And there’s much more to them than their size and spectacular behaviour — humpbacks are also known for their complex songs and remarkable feeding techniques, including bubble-net feeding, a behaviour we only rarely get to witness in Iceland.
