Stone walls, old traditions, and a piece of Ólafsvík’s history brought back to life. 🐑
The old rétt (sheep roundup pen) in Ólafsvík was once an important gathering place each autumn, when sheep were brought down from the mountains and sorted before winter. After falling out of use around the 1960s, the stone structure slowly faded with time.
In recent years, locals worked together to restore it and preserve this part of the town’s history for future generations. Built from local stone in a square layout, Ólafsvíkurrétt stands out from the more common circular sheep pens found around Iceland.
A reminder of how closely Icelandic communities have always been connected to the land around them. 🇮🇸
