Did you know Hveragerði was once home to one of South Iceland's earliest dairy cooperatives? 🥛

From 1930 to 1938, Mjólkurbú Ölfusinga (the Ölfus Dairy Cooperative) operated right here in Hveragerði. Farmers from across the region brought their fresh milk here to be processed into butter, cheese, and other dairy products that supplied homes and businesses throughout the area.

The dairy played an important role in the town's early growth, creating jobs and helping establish Hveragerði as a center for agriculture and industry, its legacy remains an important part of the town's history.

Next time you're walking through Hveragerði, take a moment to read this sign and imagine the daily bustle of milk wagons arriving from nearby farms nearly a century ago. It's a fascinating glimpse into the community's past! 🐄🇮🇸

See you in Hveragerði! 💙❤️🤍

The beautiful lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis) is a familiar sight throughout Hveragerði, where its soft green leaves and delicate yellow-green flowers are used in gardens, flower beds, and public spaces as a charming decorative plant. Its rounded leaves catch morning dew and raindrops like tiny jewels, adding a magical touch to the landscape.

But lady’s mantle is more than just a pretty garden plant. For centuries, it has been valued in traditional herbal medicine. The leaves and flowers have traditionally been used in teas and remedies, especially for their astringent properties and their connection to women’s health. The plant’s name comes from the belief that its leaves resembled the folds of a lady’s cloak, and it has long been associated with femininity and healing.

Today, we mostly enjoy lady’s mantle for its beauty and its ability to soften landscapes, attract pollinators, and thrive in Iceland’s cool climate. It is a wonderful example of how plants can bring both beauty and history into our everyday surroundings. 🌿

Another of Iceland’s spectacular summer festivals kicks off in Hveragerði this week, starting on Thursday 13th August.

Blómstrandi dagar (Blooming Day), which highlights the hothouse town’s love of flowers, has been running for more than three decades now.

Hveragerði is one of the only towns in the world located directly over a geothermal hotspot.

Volcanic hot springs heat rows of gigantic greenhouses filled with flowers, bananas, papayas, and tomatoes.

Some even call it the “Flower Village” for that reason.

Blómstrandi begins with an opening ceremony on Thursday at the LÁ Art Museum, featuring awards for the best-kept gardens in the town, which you can also visit.

There’s an exciting four-day programme of events, including live music events all over town, an “Ice Cream Day”, a football match, fun runs, fireworks, yoga classes, and much more.

Historical bus tours running every hour on Saturday from 1pm will feed you fascinating facts about Hveragerði.

It’s not just for the locals; everyone is welcome, and Hveragerði is easily found, just off Route 1 on the way to the South Coast.

If you’re nearby, drop in and join the party!

And don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Geothermal Park, sample the perfect pizzas at Ölverk, or taste the fabulous food hall at The Greenhouse.
