Meet Filip.. One of Filip’s favorite Northern Lights memories started at “our” Ewa’s birthday party, when someone suddenly shouted that the lights were out.

Within minutes, a whole bunch of them were running behind the hotel to catch an iiiincredible show in the sky.

Filip and Olga took loads of photos that night - although actually getting those photos from Olga turned into another adventure entirely. After weeks of begging, they finally made their way from Olga’s phone to Filip…

Worth the wait. :)

Next up in our Northern Lights stories: 9-year-old Markús, future guide.

We asked him for his absolute favorite memory of seeing the Northern Lights.

“Hahaha none!”

None?! Why?

“Because I see the Northern Lights aaaaall the time.”

Even from home?

“Yeah, of course!”

We tried telling him how lucky he is to grow up somewhere where he can see the Northern Lights from his own home.

His answer?

“Hahaha NO!”

Well… apparently when you’re nine and growing up in South Iceland, the Northern Lights are just another normal evening..

Next up in our Northern Lights stories: Olga.

October 10th, 2024 was Olga’s birthday, and around 20 friends were squeezed into her small apartment for a proper birthday party.

At some point, she decided to quickly step outside… and that was pretty much the end of the party for her.

The Northern Lights were incredible. Greens, all kinds of colors, and for the first time in her life, Olga saw them turn pink.

So while 20 people were inside waiting for the birthday girl to come back, Olga spent about two hours outside staring at the sky.

Sorry, friends. Some things are simply worth leaving your own birthday party for…

We asked some of our Midgard family to share their favorite Northern Lights photos and the stories behind them. Because sometimes it’s not just about what happens in the sky, but everything happening around you when you look up…

Next up: Shaun!

In 2025, Shaun and his family made a pretty big decision: leaving Reykjavík behind and moving to the countryside between Hella and Hvolsvöllur.

Their new home was still very much a construction site, and after another long, long day working on the house, they finally stepped outside.

And there it was. A sky full of bright pinks, greens and blues… a whole rainbow of Northern Lights above their new home!

After all the work, the difficult move and the big change, it felt like a pretty good sign that they had made the right decision…
